Exporting images using Vers 0.91

Postby chocwrap » Sun Mar 22, 2015 6:54 pm

I've noticed a funny little thing that happens when exporting some images in the latest Inkscape version.

The image size seems to change when I export it, because the dpi changes from the default 90.

Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do to stop it happening?

Attached is an image showing what I mean..

Many thanks,

Caroline

Are your preferences set to import at 90dpi?

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Yep, preferences are set to 90.

In fact most images default to 90 but for some reason this one doesn't! :D

The dpi can still be set to 90px though, yes?

Yes it can. However unless I notice that it's changed to 91.10 it can mean that the size of the image is slightly off and for some things, that matters.

So I need to get to the bottom of it so that I can stop it happening.

Hope that makes sense.

I wonder if you may have an imported raster image, in the file that's changing its dpi? Maybe it has some instructions about maintaining that dpi, that Inkscape is following?

If you mimic settings from Ty`s example you`ll reach the bottom of it

I'm sorry Brynn - I'm not sure what you're actually saying What should I check? I have imported a raster image, added things to it and then exported it. Where in this process could this be happening?

Thanks for your help so far..

Hello,

Let's back to the beginning. Before importing the image on Inkscape check the width an height in pixels. Check if this happens with other images.

There are new preferences related to raster images on the preferences dialog of Inkscape. In recent forum's post there are mention the alias/anti-alias setting, etc.

If you could post sample images to see if also happens in other systems. [ my mind can cheat, but I have a deja-vu feeling about this error]

Greetings

This may be worth exploring.

1) Can you share the original? If so please upload or post a dropbox link.
2) Can you post any others that have the issue?
3) Did any of the problematic images originate from video*?

*I ask because some video formats do not use square pixels.

I can only echo Maestral's suggestion, to check your setup according to td's screenshot. However hulf may be on to something. Among Maestral, tylerdurden and hulf, you have some of the best help this forum has to offer.

OH! (light bulb) There were some changes in 0.91 that affect raster images, in certain situations. I would suggest following the suggestions so far -- it would be very helpful if you could provide the files or images they are asking for. And meanwhile, I'll search out the info I'm thinking of :D

Tyler - in answer to your questions:

1. I can't post the original image here as it's too large..
2. I'll have to post others as they happen. As I've already said, it isn't happening all the time :(
3. No, no images came from video BTW - you learn something new every day. I didn't know that video formats don't have square pixels

Caroline

PS. Oh, and all my preferences are set as in the image shown.

Here's another example of what's happening.

This time it's a graphic I've created using Inkscape (and not an imported bitmap).

As you can see there's no correlation between the size of the image and the size on export, with 90 dpi. And yes, all the preferences have been set as previously stated.

This mast SVG is one that I've been using for ages. Why is it now starting to go funny??

PS. I've just spotted that 2 files have appeared after having saved this image. They are - .aspell.en.prepl and .aspell.en.pws

In this recent case, the export is set to custom. Please try with "Selection"

Actually Tyler I noticed that too after I posted and changed it. This rectified the problem.

But why was 'custom' highlighted and not 'selection' do you know?

Thanks for all your help. It's much appreciated.

In v.91 Win32:

It seems Inkscape is re-writing the Export PNG panel's value into the preferences.xml, regardless of the Preferences panel settings, whenever Inkscape is quit. This seems to occur even if the document is not saved.

I can confirm similar behavior in v.91 under LinuxMint:

Changing the value of dpi in the Export PNG panel and quitting, updates the defaultxdpi value in preferences.xml.

Seems to me "default" value entered in the Bitmaps preferences panel should persist, regardless of most recent dpi setting in Export PNG panel.

I've been frustrated with Inkscape choosing which export option to use, as well. Sometimes it seems there is no rhyme or reason for whether it chooses Page, Drawing, Selection, or Custom. But it's never changed the dpi before, at least for me.
