Filter creating white space [pics]

Postby blastblast » Fri Feb 20, 2015 6:24 pm

Hi all,

Just started using Inkscape and it seems a ton of fun. One problem I am having is with the filter creating extra white space.

Here is a pic:
Image

As you can see the from the comparison the top 3 boxes using Fitler>Distort>Torn Edges, has the 'cursor border area' surrounding it quite far away.
The bottom image of the 3 boxes with no filter are normal with the 'cursor border area' hugging the shape.

Perhaps this is some sort of inevitable imaging formula that must occur with filters, and if I was just working with the graphics themselves it might be nothing more than a slight annoyance ... BUT the trouble is, the extra 'cursor border area' translate into WHITE background instead of transparent space when it is exported as PDF.

To make sure this is not a problem with just PDF exportation, I exported as PDF the top filter boxes image and it has the white background. When I exported the bottom non-filter boxes image there were no white background, it just showed the boxes.

So...
(1) Does anyone know of any way this can be fixed?

(2) If not, are there any work-arounds?
I tried using the bezier tool to make a box around the top box, and selected the top box and used Object>Clip>Set, but it didn't look professional because it still showed the white background, just closer to the torn edges.

Thanks

Hello

I'm using Inkscape 0.91 in a Linux System (Ubuntu 14.10) and I don't see any white space

See the next screenshots for more info

The general setup when "saving a copy" in pdf format:

The visualization in the pdf reader in my system (I think it's evince)

- Say in which operative system you are, and what verion of inkscape are you using
- Maybe you didn't use the configuration above
- Maybe is your pdf reader
-Try to do a search in the forum, because this topic always is asked (in general, exporting to pdf).

Good luck
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

Hi.

If question was about bounding boxes, you can set it to geometrical one from visual bounding box.
Or use a duplicant/clone of the objects to clip them.

hulf suggests using File menu > Save a Copy in PDF format. I'm not familiar with that technique, although it may well be better ;). And it might depend on your ultimate goal for the image, as to which way you go.

Also, I'm not sure if this problem can be attributable to the type of reader or renderer. Some export problems are, so that one PDf viewer might show certain features, while another one doesn't. But I'm not sure about this issue. I can say that Adobe Reader shows me the same results you describe.

Using Save As PDF, I think you can get the result you want this way.

-- Document Properties > Custom Size. Now you need to set the size of the image to what is shown on Selection tool control bar, with the filtered object selected. This will make the page size fit the object, just like the bounding box now does. If you click the "Resize page to drawing or selection" button, it will set the page size to include the white space. But the Width and Height shown on the Selection tool control bar does not include the white space. (I haven't tried this myself, but I think you may need to move the filtered object to where it's bottom, left corner lies at 0,0 or the object might not be centered in the new page.)
-- Save As PDF, and on the PDF dialog, choose to export the page, rather than the object (Output Page Size: Use document's page size).

Let us know what happens :D

Edit
Oops, Lazur slipped in a reply while I was typing. Just changing the type of bounding box doesn't solve this issue. I know, I did try that :D

Note that there will always be white space between the torn edges, because of course there's no such thing as an image shaped anything except rectangular or square.

If you need a transparent background, I'm not sure how to do that, with PDF. You might need to use Export PNG. Or maybe there's some way to use Edit menu > Make a Bitmap Copy....but it looks like you'd be back to where you started, with the white space.

I'll bet Xav will have a good solution for this. He's a super Inkscape guru! (along with many other members here!) Image (Xav's tutorials: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11981)
Off topic:
(Someone needs to make an "Inkscape guru" smilely! There would be less than a 1% chance of getting in the smiley collection here, but people could still use it with their own image host. Or upload to the gallery on the website!)
