Unlink clones, but retain changes?

Postby Nonamebu » Sat Aug 10, 2013 8:34 pm

I created a clone of an object so I could bend the original then rotate the clone independently. But, when I unlink the clone I lose the bend from the original.

Is there any way to unlink the clone, keeping the changes intact?

Thanks..

Hello:
I think that you are right expecting that after unlink a clone of path with a Live Effect, it should remain with the transformation. I don't know maybe is a bug.

A thing you could do is DUPLICATE(Ctrl+D) the original path, and then convert the first duplicate which is linked to the clone in an object with Shift+Ctrl+C. After that, you can unlink the clone.

I just tried this and after unlinking the clone had the same path effect as the original.
Try this: make a rectangle. Convert to path. Apply the path effect 'bend'. make a clone. Unlink the clone. Does it not still have the bend?
Can you tell us which version of Inkscape you are using?
Your mind is what you think it is.

Why would you even unlink the clone? Clone can be rotated, scaled, flipped... independently from the original (which stays unchanged). You may not change the shape, color... of the clone but these could be changed on the original. That should be the main goal for cloning, right?

Still, even after you unlinked the clone, the path effect is corresponding to the object`s bounding box - meaning - path which you used for bending would be affected with previous changes (rotation, scale..) and further translations of the object (after unlinking) would be affected accordingly. Converting to path (Shift+Ctrl+C) would preserve the changes and release the effect/bending path and you may continue with editing.

Hello
I don't know for the original post, but my Inkscape version is 0.48.4 in Windows 7
I tried this:
- Draw a rectangle
- Convert to path
- Apply Bend LPE
- Bend it
- Clone it
- Transform the clone: rotate, escalate, skew
- Unlink the clone
- Result: the unlinked clone changes its form.

I think I get it. It does appear I was mistaken. The original bend effect wasn't being lost, but transferred to the rotated object and giving a different effect. After reexamining I don't know where I got the idea it was being lost.

Converting the path of the original object before unlinking the clone stopped the bend effect being inherited. Works great now. Thanks!
