drawing challenges and contests at Inkscape Community

Postby brynn » Mon Jun 23, 2014 7:59 pm

Hi Friends,
In case anyone is interested, we have been, and will continue to have Drawing Challenges and Contests at Inkscape Community, for as long as anyone is interested. You all are welcome to participate!

Challenges are quite informal, and essentially, are nothing more than opportunities to practice your skills. There's absolutely no competitive element to it. There's not even a requirement to post your results, if you don't want to. Although you won't be able to get constructive comments about your work, if you don't show it. Results are posted in the forum topic/thread where the challenge is initially announced. The challenges are basically just ideas that people come up with, to help keep the inspiration flowing, and skills sharp. You can make them as hard or easy as you want

Our first 3 challenges have been:
And we'll be periodically announcing more. And as well, any member is welcome to propose a challenge, if they have an idea they'd like to explore, or see how others would approach it.

Our Contests are a little more formal, and are competitive, although in a very friendly environment. Typically either I'll come up with an idea, or there will be some discussion and concurrence about the subject for the drawing contest. Anyone is welcome to suggest a subject. Like with Challenges, there's is no time limit. But unlike the challenges, results are uploaded into a special album in the Inkscape Community Gallery, where members can "vote on" or Rate the images. At the moment, we only have 2 people pariticpating. But as soon as we have 3 or more, then the image which receives the highest rating, will become the Featured Image on the front page of the gallery (http://inkscapecommunity.com/ic_gallery/index.php)!

Our first 2 contests have been:

And I'll try and keep this topic updated, as we add new challenges an contests

Interesting - that fireworks page crashes my browser every time! Of course I'm on Windows IE, and around here that's pretty deprecated.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Maybe it's because of either these svg-s embedded:
buggy one
large one

Edited my posts containing those, now they are only linked.
It should work now.

Yes, that was it, very interesting, sort of like embedding .exe 'bomb' files in html which is not allowed for this very reason... So you could just completely take down a forum this way. I wonder if there's a precaution forums could take.

Off topic:
The page displayed fine for me, except the image wasn't animated. (Firefox current) I don't think it would make a very effective attack on a website, because it doesn't affect all browsers. It's just a matter of how well a browser can handle SVG files.

Off topic:
They weren't animated, just regular svg-s from inkscape with no modifications added.
Still didn't took the chance to animate any svg with good luck.

Both files were made with lpe-s, generating a single path with 100000+ nodes.
If it was converted to path, broken apart and grouped together, it would possibly be better rendered.

Here's an idea about fireworks: yes, you can animate fireworks in SVG with much pain. But, there's a much more clever way: you can also animate the fireworks by abusing the loading time: pad the document with lots of useless data, then have the outermost rings be at the end. Thus, the fireworks will bloom as the file loads.

It's a unique feature that is only possible with SVG.

I have already "used" that "feature".
With no really unnecessary-useless data in svg-s.

Hi Friends,
We just started a new drawing challenge. This one is more aimed at new Inkscape users, and has a 2 part tutorial to accompany it.

Draw Unique Snowflakes challenge

The link to the tutorial is in the op of that topc. As just one example, here's a snowflake I drew using the technique in the tutorial. Like in nature, I think it would be hard to draw the same snowflake twice, using this technique :D

Anyone is welcome to participate. Let it snow!
