Clipped Images Are Still Acting Unclipped (Kind of?)

Postby babyroxasman » Fri Feb 22, 2019 10:23 am

Yea I have no idea what to call it. So i've had this problem happen multiple times before and its finally got on my nerves enough to ask about it.
Image
So I clipped everything that was sticking out past the green box but there's a couple parts (I know exactly which ones) that just won't cooperate. I'm really bad at explaining things so i'll just post pictures step by step.
So I unclip the part I know is causing the problems. I clip the outlines and the circle without a problem (2nd image) but as soon as I clip that shading it doesn't want to stick like the rest (3rd image). I turned the blur off just to see if that did anything. It didn't.

Since its something that's happened multiple times for me I didn't think it was uncommon so that's why i'm here to see if anyone else has had this problem before and if they've ever found a way around it.

I would probably clip the whole picture, instead of just an object in it. I also cannot reproduce the problem. Can you share (part of the) file, and also let us know your Inkscape version (complete, please, see Help > About) and operating system?

Clipping the whole image works until you have to unclip things to clip the shading just like in the examples I gave.
Here's the file and my version is Inkscape 0.92.4 (5da689c313, 2019-01-14) Operating system is 64bit on x64

I think you have a different object selected. Can you confirm? Use Alt+click or the node tool to select the one you want, switch to selection tool when you selected it.

It is an object within a clipped group, and the outlines shown correspond to the full outlines of that object.

I can clip the shaded object without issue.

I changed the z order of objects slightly so that I could group some bits, but other than that it works as expected.

But, I'm also using an older version: Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Just like Tyler I have the correct object selected. It just seems like objects don't like to be clipped twice.
Might just have to take off the blur or something.
These are the other images I had problems with except for the tellow background, that one worked fine.

Also i'm sorry I only have cringy mlp images to show XD They're not even the good ones

Clipped twice should not be an issue... a test on random objects here worked.

my test of the original image is here.

I think what the user means is when you enter a clip masked group, and select an item inside, you get a selection box that goes around the full outline of the item. This is normal. If the item is moved, the other parts will then show up.

But I'm not sure. The description is a bit too vague to understand the problem.

I can't understand the problem, because I don't know how to view WEBP image format. Never even heard of it. What can be used to view it?

Your browser might need a plugin. Most browsers support the format. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebP#Support

Yea see it clips fine then but you still need to clip the shading to the ball and that's where the problem starts.

So here's the image without the blur so I ended up just snapping the objects to the box so it looks like its clipped but it really isn't.
I was planning on making it into a gif so that's why I ended up asking. Didn't want 8 layers to go to waste.

Thanks TD. I tried Firefox, but couldn't see them. I'll look for a plugin, if I have time.

You might need to update your FF, brynn - which version is it?

babyroxasman, a step by step instruction for how to reproduce the problem (nobody seems to be able to do it here) would probably be helpful.
(with very tiny steps, as in '1. click on object with id xxxx', '2. Shift + click on object with id yyyy', '3. Do Path > Clip > Set' ... etc. )

Or even a short screen recording (please avoid using keyboard shortcuts, if you make one)
