Perplexed..... again..... with printing

Postby Sharon175 » Tue Jan 31, 2012 7:58 am

Have gotten alot more comfortable with using Inkscape, but still baffed by some of the technical stuff. Am currently trying to send SVG files to our LS800 Gravograph Laser Engraver which sees info as "raster" and "vector". Everything I send from Inkscape goes as "raster" and I cannot get the vector lines to cut. I have tried saving with every file extension - no help. I have set my lines to .001 as suggested in another post - no luck. I have called Gravograph - don't even go there.... support tech did not know what an SVG file was and refused to answer questions about "third party software". Normally use a product called Engravelab which produces CDL files. Any other suggestions?

from my brief reading..this is another niche industry where suppliers overcharge and would rather hide information to protect their overpricing and lock in. anyway, apparently at the Discovery level of the engravostyle software, you can import eps and some other vector formats.

This machine is a printer or cutter, or both? If it does not recognize SVG as a vector format, there's nothing we or Inkscape could do about it. I think chriswww is right, that a lot of these proprieters make their software so that you can't use anything else but their products. I'm not sure why setting line width to 0.001 would help?

I don't know if the extension offered in this topic might work for you? viewtopic.php?f=31&t=4987 Also there's a nice little forum here: http://www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com/in ... 407d5ef9eb for using Inkscape with cutter machines. Maybe someone there would know something?

First, thanks for the quick feedback... I totally agree about the niche comments...

Brynn, the machine is a laser engraver... laser is strong enough to cut certain plastics we use for trophy plates, nameplates, signs, etc. Basic function is to laser off the top level of a multilevel material to reveal color underneath (e.g. gold plate with black letters). The "printer" accepts text and images from Inkscape beautifully, and Inkscape is better at producing the images (especially logos) than our engraving software. I can import the images from Inkscape into our engraving software with a very clumsy set of steps, and was hoping to be able to make the process more efficient by simply sending the files to the "printer".

The .001 stroke style came from a post I read from someone using an Epilog machine... it is the closest I can find to a "hairline" in Inkscape.

Thanks, again for the replies and I will check out the cutter forum you suggested.
