angle between lines?

Postby mike.tyson » Mon Dec 17, 2012 7:15 pm

Let's say I have two different lines at arbitray angles. Is it possible to find out what the angle between the lines is?

Related to this question: let's say I drew one line at an arbitrary angle. Now I want to draw a second line at a specific angle relative to the first line. Is this possible?

Thanks!

I am using Inkscape 0.48

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

It's not easily possible. But there probably is a way to learn the angle between 2 arbitrary lines. I'm not sure how though.

I think it would be easier to draw one line, and put a 2nd line at a certain angle relative to the first. But you do have to do a little math. Actually we get this question fairly often, and I'm tempted to put in a feature request. Anyway, there are a couple of ways to go about it.

One is to use the Ellipse tool: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... -Arcs.html

The other would be to use Object menu > Transform > Rotate: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... -Transform

Let us know if you need more specific steps. They would take a while to write out, so the more you can learn through the manual, the less we'll have to write. But if you get stuck, let us know the details, and we'll be glad to help :D

Hi.

Another way to measure angles is to use guides. However, you have to do some math yourself anyway.

Have two guides put in paralell with each others line. Remember that:
* A guide does snap to both lines (paths and objects) and boundary boxes.
* The guide can be rotated to precisely fit the same angle as the line have. Hold down Shift key and you'll be able to freely rotate the guide.
* Play with guides to get in touch with them. It will become very usable.
* After a guide is fitted, by double clicking on the guide you'll see it's angle.

By now, I assume you've already understood that the angle is given by the difference between the two angles.

Hi
By using the measure tool Image you can measure angles.
(This tool might not be in the latest stable version, will be in 0.49)

Unfortunately the angle indicated is from horizontal ( 3'oclock ) or vertical ( 12'o clock) position - dependent on you preference setting.
You will still have to calculate the difference between angles as in Grobe's method.

Oh yes, that Measure tool will be great! I'm glad to know it's probably coming soon (althought druban's probably mentioned it already, and I forgot  ).
