opening .ai and illustrator eps format files

Postby Kid riddlin » Tue Sep 17, 2013 5:15 am

is there a trick to do this? i cant seem to open them. they are files from an older collection of vector graphics (simple vector graphics) for vehicle decals and graphics kits. so these arent big files with complex layers or effects they are just plain ol line art. any suggestions would be great. thanks

It took a little while, but I opened a Youtube .eps file without issue.
http://www.youtube.com/yt/brand/media/i ... go-web.eps

I'm running Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939.

Which version Inkscape are you running?
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

New ai files are equal to pdf so you may try to rename the ai files to pdf.
Eps files need ghostscript to be installed, there are some threads here on the forum about problems with it's work if I remember it right.

If nothing works but you want to open only a few older files, you may use the trial version of illustrator.
If you want to work with many of them, maybe you better get xara (?):

A-ha!
If you have one that can open them, you can resave the files to svg-s with it, that can be opened in inkscape hopefully without any problem.

ok heres what i did: i opened it in my flexisign program and exported it as a pdf and that allowed me to open it in vector form but... when i opened it i viewed it in outline mode and weirdly it cut it into peices? perfectly straight lines... so i had to weld the solid shapes together... idk ill keep trying different methods. thanks for the help. ill keep posting my findings here. cheers

Can you upload an .eps file for others to test?.. Maybe there is something about those particular files.

You can use a third-party service like Dropbox or Google Drive for files that are disallowed for attachment to a post. Then you can put a link to the file location in the post.

I haven't find a working way yet but it all comes down you will need to install
ghostscript, pstoedit, imagemagick.
I could install gsview and imagemagick display which both displays that eps,
and was able to create a raster copy from it with cutepdf.
Somehow the dll-s have to be right between imagemagick and pstoedit, then if you can run pstoedit you may have a chance to save in another format that works in inkscape.

The extracted file opened ok in Inkscape for me, so it may simply be the ghostscript or other handler.

I did need reset the page size, tho.

Ghostscript is a bit of open interpreting software for handling postscript and pdf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostscript

It is free to download and install, but the path variables on the host computer will need to be modified to hook with Inkscape.
http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/pub ... 81749.aspx

I run WinXP and got GS installed without messing in the path variables, by installing PDFill free tools (handy pdf manipulation/watermarking/encryption tools).

Drop the .eps file into Scribus (http://www.scribus.net/canvas/Scribus) and export as .svg.

Hi
now is there a little trick to get inkscape to open ai files

Sure is! With an ai file it's even easier!
The ai file is already in PDF format! Just change the file's extension from ai to pdf and open as a "normal" pdf file.
See here as well; viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13610#p52671

edit: I can't seem to find if it really has to do with the version of illustrator, or just the saving option of the current one.
But found this interesting comparision between .ai and .pdf:
