Connecting end nodes with 2 clicks instead of 4?

Postby mathog » Sat Feb 12, 2011 6:36 am

In the example attached if I want to connect the two lines together it takes 4 clicks to select the two end nodes:

0. start the edit paths by nodes tool
1. hold shift and click on the top set of lines
2. hold shift and click on an end node
3. hold shift and click on the bottom set of lines
4. hold shift and click on the other end node
5. join selected end nodes

(The order of 2. and 3. may be reversed)

The thing is, there is no problem clicking directly on the end node at 1, it is highlighted red when I do so, but that doesn't mean it is selected. No combination of shift/ctrl or alt I tried would let me merge steps 1/2 and 3/4 to select the end node with one click.

In some cases I could get it down to 3 steps with

1. hold shift and click on one set of lines
2. hold shift and click on the second set of lines
3. hold shift and drag to select two end nodes in a box.

However that only worked when the geometry was such that only the two nodes would be selected by a box which contained them.

Is there some way to select an end node in one click?

Thanks.

Select both paths before you switch to the node tool <F2>? (Often you might have them already selected anyway, e.g. from editing fill&stroke attributes)

In your example, I'd do Ctrl+A, n, drag-select the two nodes, Shift+j

Hi mathog,
Well yeah, if the path is already selected, it only takes one click to select a node. And also if you're selecting the end nodes of the same path. But if you have to select the other path, you have to click again, and then again to select its end node. I don't see any way around it. But at least now, we can actually select and join nodes from 2 separate paths, without having to combine them into the same path first ;)
