[solved] Edit gradient mask without unmasking the whole

Postby Inkscaper_ » Sat Sep 13, 2008 8:30 pm

Is it possible to edit mask gradient without unmasking the whole object?

Lets say I want to make a reflection of a simple object - then I would duplicate this object, put rectangle with black & white gradinet filling on top of it, then select both object and rectangle and use "Set mask". But when I want to tweak amount of reflection by manipulating gradient filling of the mask - I have to release this mask first. Could I somehow do this without unmasking objects every time?

I'm sorry, I have forgotten to write full topic name again :|
Could somebody change it to "Edit gradient mask without unmasking the whole object"? Please.

You can do this with a clone of the mask.

Create a rectangle that will be the mask and move it away from the object you want to mask.
Create a clone of the rectangle mask and position the clone over the object, Set the mask
Now edit the gradient on the first original rectangle and it will be reflected on the masked object :)

If you have your Inkscape preferences set to Unlink clones when Original is deleted (alternative is the clones get deleted also) you can safely delete the original rectangle and the object will keep its mask.

Thanks prkos, this way it is a lot easier to achive nice reflection effect.

Couldn't you also do this without cloning if your Inkscape preferences is set to share gradients?

Nope, sharing gradients will only enable you to use the def of an existing gradient, I guess the direction of a gradient is particular for objects, different objects can share a gradient but you can position the gradient differently.
