Filter to approximate coloured pencil?

Postby UserError » Sat Mar 09, 2013 1:04 am

Hi,
I'm pretty new to Inkscape but have jumped right in...
I'm creating a map for a local school & want a background that that at least "has a feel of" or better still looks like it has been coloured with colouring pencils. Can anyone point me towards a filter that might do, or a starting-point filter that I could try & tweak?

If the filter is a non-starter, maybe an image pattern fill. I'd rather not have to to & fro between Gimp & Inkscape but if that's what is needed, so be it.
Thanking you in advance,
jonathan

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

I think there might one at Open Clipart LIbrary. Look up user "ivan_louette". I think there was a colored pencil type of filter in some of the first filters he put there. And you can download directly from OCL. Even if there's not one there, you'll have fun looking through all his filters :D

I used the hatches LPE and then applied the chalk and sponge filter... tweaked the frequency a little.

great idea Druban. It looks fantastic.
I was just trying to duplicate it and noticed that when I open up the Path Effect Editor, that the Editor is too big to fit on my screen, so, I attempted to make it smaller, but it won't budge! : ( I can't change the size no matter what I do, so I can't get to the bottom of the screen to change any numbers. Is that an Inkscape glitch, is it known? I'm using the latest stable version v 48.2

Hi flamingolady

What if you make the Path Effect Editor a standalone window - by dragging the top border to the canvas?
Drag on the red oval - to bring it back drag the blue oval - took me a day to figure this out first time!!

I thought about the Hatches LPE too, because I'm pretty sure it has settings to make it look like real pencil-on-paper hatching (without the filter). But I wasn't sure if jonathan wants to make line drawings or sketches, or to use it like druban has shown (or both?). But I'll bet you could use that chalk/sponge filter on simple paths, just like druban did on hatches, for a similar effect!

Hi,
I'm having trouble with the forum system - thought I'd posted a reply...
Thank you for your input. druban's solution is what I'm looking for.
I'm working on it now.
Ta,
Jonathan

fyi - usually the first several posts on this forum have to go through a moderator, so it may take some time before it shows up, but not to worry (it's an attempt to keep the trolls and hacks away, it's amazing at just how many are out there trying to ruin a good thing)!
Also, just to note, I wasn't trying to hijack your post - I figured if I couldn't re-size a menu, possibly you couldn't either. oh, and thx to Ragnar, I had the issue on the stand alone menu! but I did click on it to move it in and out a few times, and, you won't believe this, but somehow after doing that it's miraculously letting me re-size that menu again, go figure.
