[Solved] How do i split this object up into multiple paths?

Postby grahamf » Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:16 am

Hello. A while ago I had used gimp to add colour to a sketch from the Pearls before Swine comic:

But I wasn't completely happy with the outcome, so I imported a high resolution scan into Inkscape and used trace bitmap to get this:
Fairy.svg
(37.81 KiB) Downloaded 159 times

The problem is, i've only been using Inkscape for 36 hours or so, and I honestly cannot find the tutorials that show me what I need to do.

How can I seamlessly fill in all of the empty areas in this image, or can you point me to some relativelyt clear guides as to how to do this?

thanks.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

There might be a few ways to do it, depending on exactly what you need. To make multiple paths, as if you had drawn it in Inkscape, you'd have to use what's known as 'node editing' to break it up into paths. And unless you've done it before, there will be a small learning curve. Plus it will be a fair amount of work. You can read about paths and editing paths here in the manual http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths.html. You'll probably want to use Path menu > Simplify, to reduce the number of nodes, before starting on the node editing.

If something like this would work:
Image
Select the result from Trace Bitmap. Add a stroke and remove the fill (Fill/Stroke dialog, or bottom left corner of window) Then do Path menu > Break apart. Also probably use Simplify here too.

Why do you need to have multiple paths? If it's for the purpose of coloring it, you might be able to use the Paint Bucket tool instead, to color it. Although I see some color in the wings that isn't outlined by a stroke/path, meaning that you won't be able to color the wings like in your PNG, using the bucket tool. You could still achieve the same coloration, but it will take a couple of extra steps. And because of how the paint bucket tool works in Inkscape (a vector graphics editor) it will also create paths. Simpler paths than from trace bitmap. So I'm thinking this might be the best choice.

But maybe you need multiple paths for another reason? Once we know that, we can give more detailed instructions :D

Mostly I'm hoping to seamlessly paint it. when I used the fill command it left a gap between the lines and the fill, which I wasn't happy with.

I removed the fill and broke it apart it it's separate elements and used layers to fill it.

I'm fairly happy with it; now that I got it looking kinda like I want and being composed somewhat the same as the tutorials; i should be able to figure out the rest.

grahamf,

I'm just learning Inkscape and have been reviewing tutorials like crazy. I think your issue with gaps is addressed in this Youtube video at about the 8 minute mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlsf3f_YI6s Lots of luck.
