question about line not moving - path indicates different

I drew a straight line w/ the bezier tool consisting of 2 nodes that I want to curve. I can't adjust the visible line, but if I click the button "show path outline" it shows the adjustment I tried to make as a thin red line. Pic attached. Why is it doing this, and how can I make it work right? TIA

You have drawn the line in spiro-path mode.
Open the live path effect editor and remove the spiro lpe.
