I am a complete beginner when it comes to graphic software/editing, so please bear with me.
A friend helped design a page for me, containing mostly text and a couple of small images, so I can have a sheet of vinyl cut to make a spray paint mask stencil. Some of the text needs resizing/editing, and my friend is now not available to help me with it.
She did the work using Adobe Illustrator, and sent me the file, which is saved as a PDF format.
When I import the PDF into Inkscape, I see that I'm not able to do any editing of any of the images. Is there something that I need to do to be able to edit some of the text and images, then resave the file?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Editing an imported PDF file
Re: Editing an imported PDF file
You will probably need to ungroup the contents, unless your friend has given you a raster image (like a big photo) packed into a pdf file.
To check, click on the object on your page with the selection tool, and look into the status line at the bottom of the window.
If it is a group, hit Ctrl+U to ungroup. You may need to repeat the process a couple of times.
If you end up with a single 'image' (text in the status line), I would not use Inkscape to edit the contents of the pdf.

Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!

Re: Editing an imported PDF file
Depending on the software that created the pdf, it can be a complicated pile of parts. If you share the file here as an attachment or link to a file sharing repo (google drive, dropbox, etc.) we can maybe get it to a stage where you can easily edit it.
Have a nice day.

Thanks for the replies. When I get home from work, I'll open the file in Inkscape to see if I can ungroup it's contents for editing. I have attached the PDF file in question here as well, if that helps.

Re: Editing an imported PDF file
I have tried Moini's suggestion of hitting CTRL U to ungroup the contents of the PDF, but I just ended up with a 'mess', which I was unable to edit. This isn't worth the aggravation that I've experienced, and I now will look for a graphic designer who can help me to complete my project.
One thing that I did learn: A friend is great to have around, until you actually need them.
Thanks for replies.

Hello
Just to say that the import from to PDF to inkscape's svg will never be perfect. There are some elements that aren't easy to translate. And the .ai format, unfortunatelly for me and others that prefer Inkscape, is the "de-facto" format for vector designs. It's not your friend's fault ...entirely.
I've checked your file. Thank you for sharing it. I don't know exactly what kind of changes You want. When opening checking the option "use poppler" in the import dialog I was able to see the text as they appear in the PDF. However , the texts are now paths, so If you want to add more text it won't be possible. If You only want to move, scale You can do it.
Perhaps, it's not neccesary to ungroup the design, Just do quick double quick over the text or shape You want to select
On the other hand, If You don't know anything of Inkscape. You will have trouble
Good luck

Re: Editing an imported PDF file
It's not so bad... ungroup three times and have at it.
If you don't have the "Hattenschweiler "font on your machine, the font "Impact" is pretty close for the text "MD". For the text that says "zero", the font "Orbitron" is pretty close.
Everything else seems custom or imported and made of paths.
Once you compose/edit/arrange the text and other elements, you can modify them to your liking.
I suggest exploring the built-in tutorials in Inkscape, which should provide enough instruction to manage the job.
Feel free to chime back if you have comments/questions/concerns, or to let us know how it goes!
