Saving Files in Inkscape

Postby sandymcc » Mon Sep 08, 2008 9:23 pm

I've been using Inkscape off and on for several years and have even written a couple of simple tutorials... but this problem is new to me and I'm hoping someone has run across it before.

I have an Internet friend who has just recently installed Inkscape on her XP computer. She is an owner of a Craft Robo and wants to save files in .dxf format so she can import them into RoboMaster to cut. However, every time she saves as a .dxf (or even as .svg), the file extension is changed to .txt. Even if she draws a simple circle, the same thing happens upon saving. Is there some setting in her computer or some program she may have installed that is causing this? I googled for this, searched the FAQ's and searched on .txt at this forum, but couldn't find this issue posted anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never heard of that. Very strange. I think you are right to question if something could be interfering.

I guess the first thing I would do is uninstall Inkscape and install it again. Make sure she is installing 0.46 and not an older version. If that doesn't help, try installing one of the development versions (you can have both 0.46 and development versions isntalled at once).

If you still don't have luck, try saving as some other formats and let us know if they also get a .txt extension. Saving as PDF might be a good one try.

Actually, she's using one of the .47 versions because she just heard about the spiro function. The scrapbookers are going nuts over that new tool because you can easily design beautiful flourishes to cut out and flourishes are hugely popular with them.

I did suggest she try downloading .46 just as a test to see if the same thing happens. I'll also have her try saving as .pdf. Thanks....

Kewl. It's always fun to hear how Inkscape is being used. I would never have thought to use Inkscape for scrapbooking.

If she's using a dev build then it may have been bug that has since been fixed. I would try 0.46 because it definitely shouldn't have that problem, and if it does then perhaps we can suspect something is interfering. Otherwise, if it's a problem with the dev build it may have been fixed in a newer build.
