whats the difference between using the master opacity and using the alpha opacity?

the alpha is specific to either the fill or stroke depending upon which your editing, the master is whole object, so both at once.
eg. with alpha you can have a semi transparent fill, with a solid outline, with master its all semi transparent.

thank you for the reply. I was using an object with only fill and didn't notice a difference between one and the other.
