Selection for path difference operation

Postby Noobscumer » Fri Jun 05, 2009 3:35 am

Hello
I'm new to Inkscape and am trying to follow this tutorial

http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/AShortExampleLogo.html

I'm stuck at stage 6, when selecting the mountain path a box appears that cuts the top from the letters like:

SVG Image

any help would be appreciated i've been fiddling with this for ages now

I don't know that I can answer your question, but I'll give it a try. Unfortunately, I can't get your image to display properly for me. I see the FHMC and the mountain outline. But over the mountain area, is big red X and "linked image not found". Could you try uploading to the forum as an attachment, or else petaIMG? (Both free.)

Without seeing the image correctly, my only comment would be that that's what Step 6 is intended to do
"6. Trim the tops of the letters."

But I'm sure things will make more sense when I see the image correctly ;)

Thanks for your help Brynn

i tried again from scratch and still can't get past this step

This is the svg as far as I've gotten:

I know it's going to be something really daft but i just can't see what i'm doing wrong

Since starting again the path difference tool doesn't affect the image at all

Well, I can't get the file opened at all from MediaFire. I'm getting an error message saying something like 'connection to database failed - please try again later'

Maybe EarlyBlake can open it? Otherwise, I'll wait for awhile and try again.

That's the svg again
Thanks again guys for taking the time.

I did the video tutorial and everything was fine, but the logo still wont work, but i think i've found the problem

The text has changed back from a path to a group i cannot convert it to a path, I select it and the info pane says:

Code: Select all

Group of 1 object in Layer 1 etc

then no matter whether i use the Path > Objecct to path, or the keyboard shortcut it says:

Code: Select all

No objects to convert to path in the selection

Sorry I did see the SVG file. I was rushing. It's because of the group. You currently can't do path operations on a grouped set of objects. Un-group them and you can do a difference on the individual path. Or ungroup and then do a combined cntl k on paths (that were converted from text). Then you can do just one difference operation. That's what the error message means. Groups of paths are considered an object. And boolean/path operations only work on paths. I had to do ungroup three times to break it about. Then everything worked fine.

Blames this on IE ;) You know FF isn't just for power users anymore. It's been ready for prime time for nearly a decade now. And it make you less susceptible to infections form malicious sites. And it has the ad blocking plug in. I think FF passed 30% usage a while ago. Although I have to say 3.0 is glitchier than 2.0 was.

Thanks Early. Yeah, I still can't open it
It's more likely how I have IE set up, for security, than IE itself. Because I do have the Renesis IE Plug-In, which allows me to open SVGs with IE. I am able to open SVGs from petaIMG, which is why I suggested it, and I'm pretty sure I can open files from uploaded forum attachments.

Anyway, tom, have you got Step 6 to work yet? I notice in Step 5d.ii. a Combine Path instruction. However, I also know from experience, when one is just learning, it's not always obvious if you think you've followed instructions, when a particular step doesn't actually happen. Then again, I may have the longest "learning curve" in Inkscape's history, lol

I went to http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?nwl1igeryzj

with IE 8. I had to wade through waist high pop-ups to get to the file. They made me look at a Family Guy quiz. I hate Family Guy! But I did eventually download the file with IE. I had IE's pop-up blocker on, still pop-ups >< After I closed all the pop-up, this is what the site looked like:

Does IE display the download button when you view the page, brynn?

Sorry about the pop ups, i thought mediafire was ok.

I use firefox with the ad blocker extension, I haven't seen a pop up for so long I forget that stuff still goes on.

I don't blame you. I blame brynn for using IE! ;) J/K :D I use FF too. I did not notice either in FF. I just wonder why brynn can't see that down load link, and I didn't want to miss a chance to knock IE

Very funny. If FF usage is at 30%, I wonder what IE is?

I don't see the download link because apparently clicking on the link provided starts the download. When I click on the link, I get the exact same page that you show in your screen shot, except in the place where it says "Click here to start download", instead I see....I don't remember the exact text, but it was something to the effect of 'download in progress, please wait'.

I did not get ANY popups, nor do I see the World WarCraft ad (or any ads) as I have my IE well defended! (You might want to look into getting the MVPS Host file for your IE.) It took a long time, maybe 2 or 3 minutes (on DSL!), then I got the error message about not being able to connect to the database. Now that I think about it, it may be that the Renesis IE Plug-in isn't compatible with Mediafire, somehow. Or it may be because I don't have file-sharing enabled. I don't really know, but as I've said, I can open SVGs from other sources.

That's interesting, what do %s look like for IE versions (there's 3 to track now)?

I think it's great your company site has hits from obscure clients, like Netscape 4 and wget :D Although, judging from this forum, the Inkscape community strongly favors Firefox. 62% of people here use Firefox as opposed to 19% for IE.
