Please help a new member-GIMP photo to Inkscape comic

Postby JaimeSommers » Sat Oct 29, 2011 3:40 am

Hi,

I am new and have just joined. please can you help, I have never used Inkscape before and need to create a tutorial which will enable me to create a basic comic using a photo created in Gimp (which i have never used before either). I am struggling big time despite searching for a tutorial on YouTube or online.

i would be so grateful if someone could help, i have spent all day trying to work out how to do it and am running out of time.

i have no resources to share but would willingly share anything once I know how to work the software.

I hope someone can help, it is soo important that I learn how to do this asap,
Many thanks Jaime

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

I'm afraid that, unless you're already a good artist, and also have good computer skills, you might not be able to do this quickly. When you say "asap", in this case as possible will probably not mean "quickly".

You have never used The GIMP or Inkscape, so you have at least one very sophisticated graphics programs to learn. If I understand your question, it doesn't sound like you'll need to learn GIMP. Anyway, these programs are based on 2, mostly very different graphic modalities. Inkscape is a vector graphics program, and GIMP is a raster graphics program. That means that there are different tools, and that tools which might have the same name in both programs actually work very differently. Here's the Wikipedia on vector graphics so that you can begin to learn at the most basic level: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics

It's not necessary to barter any resources. We're glad to help, and speaking for myself, helping is the reward (I like to help other Inkscapers because of the help I received here when I first started to learn Inkscape) :D Of course you're welcome to share your images here (Finished Inkscape Work or Work In Progress forums) or at OCL (http://www.openclipart.org/).

Next I'd like to direct your attention to Inkscape Help menu > Inkscape manual (requires internet connection), and also Help menu > Tutorials (no internet needed). The tutorials are especially helpful for beginners, imo, because you can actually practice directly on the tutorial and on the illustrations, to see how they work (because it's actually an Inkscape document!). Then if you look at my forum signature, you'll see a Quick Guide, which is also excellent for beginners, imo. It really is a good quick start for Inkscapers like you who want to learn fast :D And also, the tutorials sites in my sig are excellent -- not necessarily all are for beginners, but especially the video tutorials -- you might find some that cover particular techniques that you might need for your project.

But, I don't mean to bring you down Image I just want you to have the resources you might need, and a small dose of reality. And now I have a couple of questions. You said:
I...need to create a tutorial which will enable me to create a basic comic using a photo created in Gimp

Do you want to create a tutorial, or do you want to create a comic? Or are you looking for a tutorial to teach you how to convert a GIMP photo/image to a vector comic?

Well, either way, to create a tutorial, you would first need to learn the technique, right? Before you can teach others, usually you have to learn it for yourself :D I can't be entirely sure without a little more info, but it sounds like you will either be able to use Trace Bitmap, and then possibly tweak the result; or trace it "by hand" with the Pen (Bezier) or Pencil tool. Can you show us a screenshot of the GIMP image? And also, please tell us the file format of the GIMP image?

PS - I'll tweak your topic title slightly, to help you get better response :D

Hi,

Thank you so much for your help and your quick reply!

The file from Gimp will be a JPEG, I have to learn how to use that as well, but have used Photoshop so i'm hoping that will be quick. Basically i am oing to teach a class of children how to do it so I need to learn myself. I need any possible tutorials on how to create a basic comic using the Gimp JPEG created image, by basic i mean drawing the comic format and having some speech balloons - anything that will engage 14-15 year olds. I thought they would find this interesting and I really want to make it work as i have a lot to prove.

I would be very grateful for your help!
Cheers
Jaime

You know, I think I have seen a tutorial somewhere like that.....but I surely don't have saved a link. You said you've searched the internet? Look at the tutorials in my signature, and search those sites, if you haven't already. I'll try to do a little searching, even though my searching skills are rather lacking. But I seem to remember seeing some kind of tutorial like that somewhere, a long while ago.

Do you already have the image from GIMP that you're going to use? If you could show us a screenshot of it, we could offer suggestions about how to draw it, in case we can't find any tutorials. If it's fairly simple, maybe someone would actually create a quick tutorial for you. Of course I can't make promises for others, and I'm not sure I have adequate comic-drawing skills. But it's possible, depending on the photo.

Meanwhile, have a look at this Inkscape comic/webcomic. This is a thread on this forum, which will direct you to their website. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3187 They actually provide the SVG files, so you can download them, and learn how they made their comic! Also, and this might even be a fun activity for the kids; each SVG file contains an "easter egg", or a surprise of some sort, embedded somewhere in the SVG file, that's not shown on the webcomic; it might be an extra frame, additional comments (balloons) by the characters or extra images, or other various fun things to find. And along the way, you learn more about Inkscape! (They're also promoting a CD which you can order, which might be better than downloading all the comincs.)

I''ll post back if I find that tut :D

There is a Gimp-plugin that turns pictures into comics: http://registry.gimp.org/node/15994

Image People can be so clever!

(But seriously, methinks Jaime still has his/her work cut out. And of course, we're here to help if needed.)
