SVG with custom font - make portable

Postby Bucic » Tue Jun 01, 2010 3:00 am

I always thought SVG is 100% portable just like PDF but recently I got my font replaced in one of my SVGs when I opened it on another machine. The font was Quartz. My questions are:
- how to make a such SVG portable i.e. so people would not have to install Quartz font manually to view my SVG image as it looks on my machine?
- how do I check what program installed a specific font on my system which is not present on other standard systems?

Both test systems are Windows 7 x64.

The font changed from Quartz

to Sans

You need to convert text to paths so they display as expected on a machine where that particular font isn't installed. Doing so you will lose text editing possibilities, if this is important to you make a backup of the file, or move the text objects into a separate layer and hide it.

Operating systems come with a very small number of pre-installed fonts, and they probably totally don't overlap between them (windows, macos, linux). Search to find which fonts came with your OS, other are probably installed with Office or some graphics application you have installed.
