Remove section of text to let bg transparency show

Postby deebee » Sun Nov 11, 2012 5:54 pm

Hey Everybody,
I'm new to Inkscape and seem to be stuck on what appears to be a newbie issue :). I'm creating some logos for fun to learn Inkscape. This particular logo uses simple text. I'd like the exported bitmap of the logo to be displayed on a transparent bg. On the logo I created the interior spaces that do not belong to the letter, (such as the area bounded by the letter 'o' or the enclosed area in the letter 'e') are not transparent. I tried selecting these areas and creating masks, and clipping etc but I haven't had much success get the transparent bg to show in the bitmap. Any suggestions on the best way to to this?

I'm attaching an png of the logo . If you look at letters 'o' and 'e' you'll see what I'm talking about.
thanks,
dee

Welcome dee!

Select those letters, and then Object menu > Fill and Stroke > Fill tab. In the upper right area of the dialog are 2 roughly heart-shaped icons/buttons, one with a hole in it. These buttons set what is called the fill rule. I don't quite understand what "even-odd" or "non-zero" means, or refers to (mouseover to see tool tip info) but you'll want to click the one with a hole in it.

That should work, but let us know if it doesn't, and we'll try again :D

Hey brynn,
Thanks for the kind welcome and your response. For this particular case the method you suggested did not work. I think I must have screwed something up in my path to object or reverse conversions while working on the logo. I redid the logo, this time without any intermediate 'experiments' and I now I am able to get the letters to render correctly. If I find out more about what I messed up I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks for the wonderful tool and the community support. After I get comfortable with Inkscape I hope to be able to make a few contributions myself.
