[solved] selecting multiple objects changes blur value

Postby brynn » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:22 pm

Hi Friends,
I have an image made up of multiple objects grouped together. Um, I guess they don't have to be grouped....but I still have to ask the question

Each object has a Blur of 3%. If I select 2 of them, the Blur changes to 2.2%. If I select 3 of them, the Blur changes to 1.7%. After I Group them, the Blur value is no longer indicated, which I'm pretty sure doen't mean there's no Blur. But before Grouping them, it seems the more objects I select, the lower their combined Blur.

Does this mean that the Blur is actually being reduced with each additional selection? Or is it some kind of anomaly?

The blur percentage is relative to the size of the bounding box. If you select multiple objects, then the combined bounding box is usually larger, and so the percentage is smaller (since the amount of blur hasn't changed).

In practice, the objects in the selection will usually have different amounts of blur, so averaging will also be involved.

If you double click on a grouped object, you will select it as if it isn't in a group. You'll notice that the blur value is the same as before your grouped it.

When you're done editing, Remember to double click somewhere on the canvas to resume the group behavior.

Ah, interesting...
So if the original blur of the individual objects is not actually changed, what is the purpose for having the blur displayed for the selection of multiple objects?

It does that with a few other values as well (gives you the average).

I don't know the reasoning behind it. However, if I notice a weird value like "1.333" when I'm selecting a bunch of stuff that should have the same value (1), I know that something is off. :| I just set it to 1 and it fixes everything. :D

Edit: for example, it will do this with stroke width and even fill color. :?

If the blur slider was omitted in this case, how would you adjust the blur if you wanted to?

I think other software typically handles such situations by changing the value to something like "Mutli" so the situation is obvious. It also changes the font colour and style. I can't think of the exact software an situation I've seen this in though. You can still set the value and if both share the same value the value it displayed.
