Path > Union problem

Postby mauriciojize » Sat Mar 10, 2012 5:20 pm

Hi,

I'm with a problem when I try to apply the union in two path objects. The text and circle path inside the big circle simply disappear! Why does this happen? I just want to union the nodes.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

The path operations (Union, Difference, etc.) work on shapes or areas, rather than on nodes or paths. So if there's something you want to do to the nodes, it will be some other command. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "union nodes". Do you mean that you want to join them together?

OH! Maybe you want to make them all subpaths of one compound path? If that's it, then select them all, like you've already done, then use Path menu > Combine. This combines all the paths into one. The only problem with that, relative to your screenshot, is that the 2 circles' paths have different widths. When you combine them, they will all take the same style, which includes width. If you need to keep them with different widths, then before you combine them, you'll need to select one of the circles, and do Path menu > Stroke to Path.

Or maybe I have not guessed what you mean by "union nodes" yet?

Thanks brynn!

The problem arose when I tried learn Inkscape with this tutorial (http://howto.nicubunu.ro/rubber_stamp_inkscape/). Where its say "For text convert Object to Path and for circles convert Stroke to Path. Make a Union of those paths." The Union of path would be needed to next step "Intersection between the calligraphic tool and the stamp".

The Union of those paths not works, neither the intersection of these. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Oh awesome! Very helpful for us to know that you're following a tutorial, so we can also follow along, and be better able to help :D

The first thing I notice is that in your screenshot, you have not yet performed Stroke to Path on the circles. I think that after you do that, the Union will work as it's supposed to.

And for the record, yes, you're using Union properly in this case. I just didn't understand the whole story before.

Let us know how it goes :D
