What kind of formats are you looking for as being 'editable'?

Raster formats? Vector formats? Rasterized layers?
In principle, every file format that Inkscape can export is 'editable' - and Photoshop can probably import many of them (e.g. pdf, svg maybe, png, ps, eps, ...)
Can you name a couple candidates?

Thanks for the reply Moini. Being new to Inkscape i am not sure. I would love to have even rasterized layers in Photoshop. I have exported in the png format but it seems to compress everything onto one layer in Photoshop. I admit that I do not understand all of the options in the export setup window i Inkscape.

When you export a PNG, Inkscape puts everything into one layer. So it's in one layer before you get to PS.

If you're basically interested in raster graphics, why are you using Inkscape? You must need to start with vector content, for some reason?

I think there's an extension that will export each of your Inkscape layers as a separate PNG. And I would guess that PS has a way to import a file as a layer. (I know GIMP does. GIMP is a raster editor, open source like Inkscape, i.e. free) Let's see if I can find that extension (I might be dreaming, but it seems like I heard someone talking about it a while ago).....

Hi Brynn. Thanks for the reply. I like to use Illustrator (when I had it) and Freehand (also when I had it) to do lettering and effects and also to create signage in large sizes without large file sizes. Sometimes, when the printed final doesn't require being very big, I like to work in effects in Photoshop...mostly because I am primarily an illustrator painter and have more time with programs like PS and Corel Painter.

But I had a friend ask me for a logo design that might end up near billboard size and I do not want to subscribe to Adobe for Illustrator so I am learning Inkscape. I am really liking Inkscape after only having three days on it. So maybe, after more time I will find out all the things I need to know.

I will try to look up that extension that saves each layer as a separate file.

Png files, in certain raster based programs that I have used have always retained the layers when I imported them into Photoshop.

I remember some discussion (in this forum, I think) about this problem some years ago. People call it flattening, so the PNG export flattens the layers. I suspect that's such a hard coded feature, that it was easier to look at from a different perspective, and make a new extension which exports each layer separately. I think that extension might have resulted from the discussion.

Can Photoshop import SVG or pdf? I'd try that first, because it skips the rasterization.

If I were a vector designer dumping Illustrator, I'd stick with Inkscape and skip photoshop. If you still need a raster/bitmap editor I'd use GIMP. (I dumped photoshop for Gimp about 10 years ago.)

I think you can export all objects as PNGs and import into PS, but there isn't a one-click approach yet. There is an extension to place all groups on separate layers and an extension to export all layers as bitmaps. I haven't found an extension to make each object a separate group yet, but that might not take too long to do using the tab key and the group button.

I would say it simply makes Photoshop do the rasterization instead, which seems like a bad idea because Inkscape (IME & not surprisingly) has fewer glitches rasterizing its own data structures than hoping Photoshop handles every single SVG (and extension) feature the exact same way as Inkscape. Likewise, PDF, where you have to rely on Inkscape's ability to render into a format that was never its primary goal. I export as PNG at the desired bitmap dimensions to avoid the problems I had getting the other two formats into PS.
