Unable to Open Extracted Files

Postby flamingolady » Thu Jun 11, 2009 2:02 am

I downloaded a zip version of Inkscapes for Windows XP Pc, extracted the files, and don't see an .exe file to open the program with. Actually ended up downloading 2 different Inkscape versions and still can't figure out how to open the program to get it to work. What am I doing wrong? What file opens the program? (I noticed it didn't add an icon on my desktop, etc.).
thanks in adance for ideas to get this program to work.

The zipped versions are not self extracting you have to get the 7-zip (or equivalent) utility to open them. I think link for the .exe file is right in front of the compressed file link on the inkscape site. I usually get the zipped file and uncompressed it with 7-zip. Which for some reason will only let me decompress it in the same folder the compress version it located. Then I move the inkscape folder in to the programs folder. Or the programX86 on my desktop.

thanks EarlyBlake.
I did all that, and have moved the files to the Program File. Now what do I click on to get it to run?

That one.

Inkscape is not showing up for me under the Start >>All Programs menu. But it does shows up under Start menu after you start inksacoe the first time. So if you think you will be using it a lot. You might want to right click on the inkscape icon the the start menu and pin it to the start menu.

thanks for posting that EarlyBlake, a picture is worth a 1000 words! That's one of the files I keep using to try to open it, just realized that your type of file says "application"and mine says "icon". Hmm, I also don't seem to have the dll files, so there's the problem. I have downloaded several files now and it's still not including all what I need apparently. I've never had this many issues in downloading a program. Is there a site that has all files in one download? This is getting frustrating.

Are you getting an error message? If so post it here. The file you download should have everything and install itself. I haven't have any problems yet with 4 installs of the regular version and I don't know how many of the developers version. I have at least 5 different version of inkscape install on my computer right now and they are operating with out any conflict. I'll sometimes have 3 version of inkscape open at once, an no problems. The

If you've had a fail install you might have to do an uninstall and start fresh. So this thread for in how to do that:

I'm not getting any error messages, it just doesn't open.
I'm not sure I'm downloading all the files, it looks like you have to download the very first version, and two updates. I did notice that I downloaded version .46 and when I went back today, there is a version .47, and .46 is gone, so wondering if I'm missing files. It's too late to play with it tonight, so will try this again tomorrow, will delete it all and start over. here's hoping!
thanks much.

Where have you downloaded the file from? The stable version of Inkscape has an installer, so everything should simply work when you run the file.

If you've downloaded .7z file then it's probably a development version. I know on occasion the extraction process hasn't extracted all files from the archive. Perhaps this is what has happened for yourself. Try extracting the files again.
