Sharp Sloped Edges

Postby Phex » Wed Jul 18, 2012 5:22 am

Dear experts,

is there an easy way to transform a standard box or rectangle to look like this? I am referring to the sharp sloped orange box in the picture. As far as I know, one can only install round edges. With "easy way", I mean a method without subtracting shapes or carefully aligning the nodes. Maybe some filter?

Thank you a lot!

Welcome to the forum :D

Do you mean the thin red octagonal line that surrounds the yellow text? Yes, the Rectangle tool can either make four 90 degree corners, or 4 rounded corners. It's probably not the best tool for this. I don't think there's an extension or filter that will do this, although I could be wrong. I've at least looked at most, but there are some that I don't understand.

I would use the Pen/Bezier in straight line mode, snapping, and a grid. You'd have to click 9 times, to set the 8 nodes, and connect back to the first. So I don't know if that falls under your concept of easy or not. It seems easy to me.

Or there's another, somewhat easy way. You could use the Star tool in polygon mode. Set it for an 8 point star, and switch to polygon. Then just drag it out. It will make it symmetrical, but not elongated. To make it elongated, you'd have to switch to the Selection tool, and drag the horizontal arrow.

Perhaps you could make that rounded rectangle first and then turn all nodes to sharp/corner?

What Maestral said. More specifically:

1) Create your rectangle, with rounded corners
2) CTRL-ALT-C or Path > Object to Path
3) Switch to the Node tool :tool_node:
4) Select all the nodes (CTRL-A if the object is still selected from step 2)
5) "Make Selected Segments Lines" on the toolbar (11th icon for me)

As is often the case, it's quicker to do than to explain!

Thank you, this works quite nicely.

Nevertheless, it is strange that there is no option "round corners" / "sharp corners" or maybe even something more general for boxes.

There is a bunch of stuff which one can do with the screwdriver (i.e.) but originally it`s designed just for driving screws ,)

Anything, you say? Could you possibly count/enumerate/particularize/make a list of all or at least all of the necessary options for rectangles? If not, then how would you plan to improve the content of this topic? Oh, wait... your link leads to the plugin! Are you working on it to make it available in Inkscape?

Who are them to tell us how to use a screwdriver ? If it's fun then it's right ;)

they're just too numerous to list ;)

I was looking for rounded corner and found this dirty hack.

No way.

But maybe one can think of a grid tool a bit like css3 borders

with fixed width/height items and "fluid" ones
