no keyboard input

Postby three5 » Fri Dec 04, 2009 5:34 am

all of a sudden in inkscape, i have no keyboard input (os x, 10.5.8). none. is it possibly an x11 setting? something that i am missing in inkscape prefs?

in other applications (ie, firefox to type on here) the keyboard is just fine.

wtf?

Did you install anything right before this started? (for example any Xquartz beta versions)?
Can you type in the xterm that opens with X11 (try 'ls' without quotes to get a short directory listing - this command can't do any harm ;-)…
… or do you have other X11 apps installed (e.g. Gimp on OS X)? Do you have the same issue there?
Which X11 version do you have installed? (launch X11 and open from the osx menubar 'X11 > About X11')

you mean the 'standard' OS X version of Firefox or did you install an X11 based version via MacPorts? The issue seems most likely with X11 only, i.e. unrelated to applications that run natively on OS X using the 'Aqua' style gui.

inkspace is the only thing i have running under x11 on this machine... and i can type in the terminal just fine. i havent installed anything at all in the last few weeks. i have normal mouse and pen function, just no keyboard. it is a standard mac thin usb keyboard, so nothing fancy there.

ahh, you use a tablet…
Does the keyboard work if you disable or unplug the tablet or whatever is necessary to use Inkscape with 'default' input devices only?

(Caveat: I don't know much about tablets, only that they can cause input issues (e.g. pen only works for the menus but not on-canvas drawing etc.) according to reports in the bug tracker - though those are mainly on win32 platforms - myself using Inkscape 0.47 and OS X 10.5.8 on a MBP 15", just with the trackpad and regular USB mouse, never had problems with keyboard input stop working).

Which Inkscape version? Default X11 installation (v2.1.6)?

You could try to reset Inkscape's preferences to default values by renaming the preferences file (quit Inkscape first!)
  • 0.46: '~/.inkscape/preferences.xml'
  • 0.47: '~/.config/inkscape/preferences.xml'
At the next launch Inkscape will create a new pref file with default values. If that doesn't help, delete the new file and rename the previous one back, this way you don't loose any custom settings you made.

'~' is a unix-style shortcut for your 'Home' folder. You can use it in the Finder as well:
open menu 'Go > Go to Folder…' and enter one of above listed paths (without the quotes and without the file name) e.g. ~/.config/inkscape to view the contents of the user configuration folder of Inkscape 0.47.

Sabayon 5.4 media-gfx/inkscape-0.48.0 and the same problem.
Removing of ~/.config/inkscape/ had no result.
