text is getting fuzzy borders when rotated

Postby mmp » Sat Dec 01, 2012 2:11 am

hello all i have made some cool looking letters in type headlineA, used the button filter

they are nice and shine now.

but:
wen i rotate into a none horizontal or vertical way the letters get ugly edges
i thought that should not happen because of all being scalable and all

how can i correct this, or should i work differently if i want to do make stuff like this?

Hi

Try applying the filter after the rotation, seems to give better results.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Probably the reason for that is that this filter uses some raster content, which of course can't be scaled like vector content. You could try Extensions menu > Modify Path > Pixel Snap. I'm not sure if it will help, but it might. And easy enough to try. Apply the extension after the text has been rotated and positioned like you want it. If you rotate again, after snapping, you'll need to reapply the Pixel Snap. Be sure to save before and after. I've had some fairly predictable crashing when using it (although that might have been attributable to the large file size) but anyway, can't hurt to save :D

Oops, hi Ragnar. You posted while I was typing. And probably a better suggestion than mine!

thanx Bryn and Ragnar,

I tried both but it doesnt help unfortunately.

Bryn, I now understand that the applied filters are not vector based. Do i understand right that only the basic figures and letters are scalable, but not anymore if they are tweaked or if a filter is applied? I would like to make designs in Inkscape from which i can produce files that are scalable in order to make big blow ups. Any advice on how to achieve that?

Thank you :)

Yes, it's my understanding that the vector content is scalable, but any raster content provided by a filter would not be scalable (without pixelation).

The part of your question that I highlighted with red colored text, "if they are tweaked" I'm not sure what you mean by that. You can tweak any vector content or text, for example, node edit, or change colors, or edit text, or whatever; and it will still be scalable. It's only if a filter (that contains raster content) is applied that thay you'll have problems.

If you use a filter that has raster content, you won't be able to scale it at will (to produce the posters). But a combination of mine and ragnar's suggestions might work. First rotate the text without filter, and scale to desired size. Apply the filter, then use the Pixel Snap. If that doesn't work, I don't know what else to try.

Thank you very much Brynn , thats a clear answer. I (think I :) ) understand now that i have to create a shadow/glow effect myself with duplicating and the gradients etc., and that than it will be scalable. It will take me some time, but now i know how to make a good design thats scalable. I see i didnt use the word tweak in a right way. Sorry, i m still learning :)

The filters seem to work more or less ok on a vertical/horizontal text, i havent tried scaling it up real big yet, but now i see they will probably have quality loss too.

have a nice weekend :)

I hope you can find something that will work. I have a nagging feeling that I know the solution to this problem, but I just can't quite bring it into focus, at the moment. But there's a good chance it will pop into my head, eventually, and when it does, I'll reply again.

PixelSnap often can help keep raster image sharper, but not always Image
