I have been working on a logo (actually a logotype, since it is only text) and I went to make some changes (put it inside a coloured square) and I came to the horrible realization that I had converted it to bitmap. No idea how long ago, since I am still able to make changes to the text and have been happily doing so for a week or more.

Because it is a two-word, text-based logo, I can play with the spacing and have it in vector in about half an hour, so not much time was lost. But I would hate to have this happen again on something more complex.

Early in the process, I saved as pdf to send it to the client. Could this be where I went wrong? I saved it back to svg immediately afterwards, but perhaps the damage was done?

Now I have become paranoid about keeping the vector "pure" and so I re-did the logo and kept it alone in a file. I grouped it together, copied it and pasted it to another document (so that I could work on some colour tryouts) and it would not un-group. I tried copy-pasting the elements ungrouped (planning to simply switch out the background colour), and lo and behold they are all bitmap!!

How can I copy my vector image to another file so that I can work on it?

Are you on a Mac, by any chance?

I went to preferences and un-checked "update pasteboard when clipboard changes" and that seems to have solved it.
