Hello Wil,
So, I'm a beginner here too. Have you already had an answer for your question? BTW I'm from the Netherlands too, very beautiful those little chairs from Rietveld.
There is a new book on Inkscape in Dutch now, you can read about it in the topic
Dutch book on GIMP, Inkscape & Scribus. I am one of the authors.
In your case, you might first go to:
(in Dutch, because that is clearer)
Hoofdmenu > Bestand > Inkscapevoorkeuren > Gereedschappen >Te gebruiken omvattend vak, vink aan Geometrisch omvattend vak.
In English: Menu > File> Inkscape Preferences > Tools > Bounding box to use: Geometric bounding box.
That means that you can work more precisely.
Than work in millimeters? So the lines will be as thin as possible. You can adjust the document settings by going to:
Hoofdmenu > Bestand > Documenteigenschappen > Pagina > Standaardeenheid: mm
and
Hoofdmenu > Bestand > Documenteigenschappen > Rasters > Nieuw rechthoekig raster (raster=grid)
In this grid, you can adjust the space between the guidelines. So, your grid will be what you need.
Now when you draw lines, you must use the fill& stroke (Ctrl+ shift+ F) menu to make your lines as thin as you want.
Use the snap to grid (kleven aan raster) in order to use the grid effectively.
Use zoom in & out to get a more precise grid.
Did this help you?
I'll try to upload the svg file here on my dropbox. This is the link:
