Hi,
How to simplify only part of a path ?
After tracing I got areas that are way too complex (too many nodes). Can I simplify them without touching other nodes ?
Thank you

Hi.
I guess you have to do some work to get it your way. Here's mine suggestion:
I guess you have to do some work to get it your way. Here's mine suggestion:
- Find one node that delimits the part of the path that you want to simplify.
- Select that node and do a "Split path at selected node"
- If you have another node that delimits the part of the path, then do the some for that one too.
- Select the clipped path and hit Shift+Ctrl+K so that the parts of the paths separates.
- Now when you have separate paths, you can do the simplifying to one or more parts of the path (now several independent paths)
- When done with simplifying, select two of the paths that "touches" each other.
- Shift to and draw a rectangle around the two endnodes (looks like one, but have same coordinates)
- Use the tool "Join selected nodes". This makes two independed paths into one complete path.
- Repeat the procedure for the remaining independed paths
- Done. Result is a single path.

a little bit overcomplicated no ?

Re: How to simplify only part of a path
That sounds difficult because Grobe detailed step by step quite precisely. But in fact, you just have to split te path, simplify only one piece of it, then re-combine the parts. That's all.
But that's true that the simplify tool could be enhanced anyway.

I use Inkscape 0.48 on Ubuntu 12.04.
English is not my natural language so excuse my mistakes.

Hi.
I just voted on that feature request. Weird to see that it was first mentioned in late 2004, and now seven and a half year later, no progress.
v1nce. Wasn't it a bit rude to claim me being over complicated? You asked for a way to do it and I gave you the answer. What do you expect?

This may be a case where the language translation leaves a little more to be desired. The way I comprehend v1nce's comment, is that the Inkscape process is complicated, rather than your explanation being complicated.

You're likely to have right. Then it turns off that I'm the one that seems to be a bit rude.
Sorry for that
Re: How to simplify only part of a path
No worries! We can't take seriously words that might sound any particular way, because of the result of the translation. I seem to recall that v1nce....well, at least uses Inkscape in the French language (whether speaks French natively, I don't know). So perhaps French to English, then English to....Grobe's language (not sure about that either, lol) could make fertile grounds for a mistranslation.
Anyway, with patience and flexibility, we move towards greater understanding

I'll accept your apologies if you accept mines.
I'm sorry for not being clear. I really meant the process is overcomplicated (I do expect something like 'select nodes + ctrl + L', so that's why I was a little disappointed)
Your explanations were not overcomplicated they were just well detailed so that anybody could follow them.
I'd really apreciated the efforts you put in making them. keep up the good work.
Re: How to simplify only part of a path
Off topic:
Inkscape could stand to have a better user interface. Having to remember 9 steps to accomplish a task when these steps could be simplified by adding a "wizard" feature can't be underestimated. It saves the user the need to remember convoluted processes to accomplish tasks. After all: the user wants to get his/her artwork done, not sit staring at software knowing there's so much under the hood that simply cannot be used because the interface is such a mystery. It would also open the door to making Inkscape more mainstream. When I first started with PCs, the VIC20 and Comodor64 were trendy among geeks, but the "average person" never even considered such a thing as a serious home appliance. Apple has gone a long way to making computing devices as natural to use as putting your thumb on a screen and pushing aside an image to see the next.
My "wish list" for Inkscape, say for release 0.50, would be: no new features, just a massive interface face lift where we say: "That's how that feature should've worked for years!" as we test everything it does. I'd vote Yes for that for the next Google Summers of Code.
