How to make a path from a selection?

Postby WhiteBelt » Tue Nov 16, 2010 10:28 pm

I have around 100 different objects (rectangles & groups). I do a "select all" and would like to make a new path based on the outlines of the selection .
Like having 100 new rectangle objects...

Sorry if this had answered before, but the search terms are simply too common...

PS.
Also is there a "Reselect" command in Inkscape?
Edit: Looks like there is no "reselect" :?

I can think of two or three things that you might mean.
1. Select everything, duplicate (ctrl-d), [optionally Group,] select the Fill and Stroke dialogue, remove fill, set stroke. Outlines each object.
2. Select everything, duplicate, ungroup repeatedly until no groups remain, Path->Union, set stroke. A single shape that outlines the lot, with internal gaps.
3. Do 2, then Path->Break apart. The gaps are now separate shapes, and can be removed.
