Logo for global OpenStreetMap Mapping party

Postby LatLon » Sun Dec 11, 2011 4:53 am

Hi,
I guess some of you already know http://www.openstreetmap.org where we create a digital map of the world in a wiki style.

For February next year we plan a global mapping party (well just tracing imageries around the clock),
that gave the funny name "night of the living maps".
Unfortunately the one who wanted to create the design, is run into troubles and I'm not an artist  So can anybody of you please help us? Sadly we have no money, but maybe we can spot a focus on the places where you live and improve the map? But that's something I can't promise, as this is a democracy and not a dictatorship ;)

So as you assume, we don't take the thing to seriously. Of course it's name is derived from "night of the living deads", as the 7.February has full moon and computing ~8hrs in front of the screen makes you looking scary.
If I had a wish, I would like to have some cute 'geek zombies', that are somewhat related to creating a map. Maybe a style like happy tree friends or Mr. Saladfingers would be cool. Just some ideas for scenery:
-one zombie sitting in front of a pc screen (displays a map of course)
-one zombie drawing a map on a desktop (maybe with a circle or compass?)
-a zombie knees on the ground to draw on a giant map role
-2 zombies put a map on a wall and a third one paints on it (maybe map titled "Night of the living maps")
-one zombie follows a virtual GPS track carrying a GPS receiver

But this are just my own ideas, you are completely free, just keep in mind that we need it for avatars (social networks), banners and flyers of course. So please not to much details, but cute looking :D I would be very happy if anybody would give it a try, as this is currently a big problem for us...

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

I followed your link to OpenStreetMap.org, to learn more about it, because it sounds like something I might like to do (the map-making, I mean). But when I clicked the Edit tab, I got a message box saying something like "You must zoom in to edit". But I couldn't close the message box. I click OK, and I hear the error ding sound, the box flashes, and stays there. I tried to close the window/box with the red X button at top left, same thing. I tried to close the tab (IE8) but same thing again. I tried to switch to another tab, same thing. I could not even close out IE!! I finally had to use Task Manager to shut down IE entirely!! Needless to say, I won't be trying to learn any more about it, even though I still think it sounds interesting, and something I might like to do. If you can get that fixed, I'd appreciate a chance to look around the site a bit more.

But getting to your message, I just wanted to say that I think there's a good chance that someone here might like to help. We have some members who enjoy fantasy map making, as well as some excellent cartoonists.

I wouldn't give up yet. The forum has been a bit sluggish lately, and those I was thinking of who might be interested haven't been around.

Is there a deadline for the project?

Well the event is on 7.Feb. so I guess it would be wise to start promoting it towards our Community starting at 7.Jan. Unfortunatly is (IMHO) esp. this design a very basic step for a cooperate identitity, to fill this idea with life.

to me doesn't make much sense to have (mindless) zombies doing logical and involved tasks.
maybe would have been better as a cartoon strip with zombies chasing someone down from all directions and the hapless almost victim gets away by using openstreetmap maps on mobile device to escape certain doom? :)

Ok so the rollout started this minutes. Thanks to all of you :) Ken Vermette was the one we picked for a logo and fabskee for the avatar. Another one from OpenClipArt supported us with a nice banner.

If anybody of you is interested in the topic, I hope you can find a mapping party next to you within the next days: www.nightofthelivingmaps.org
