Need help - Installation using Wine at Linux Ubuntu

Postby nyo7nyo » Wed Nov 07, 2012 2:46 pm

Hello there,

I'm newbie here and I need some advices from Inkscape senior here. I have a little problem when try to install Inkscape. :)
First, I'll explain my situation here.
I try to install the software at my office computer which is using Linux UBUNTU 12.04 LTS and I don't have access to root administrator.
I has been ask to IT staff here and they said, just used Wine (Already installed by IT department) if you want to install any software as long as it didn't disturb and harm the office network.

Okay, then I try this step : (Please correct me if I'm wrong).
1. Download the Insckape-0.48.3.1-2.exe <---- download from sourceforge.
2. Open the exe with Wine windows program loader (I used Wine 1.5.16).
3. Finished installation and run the program.
4. Notice the issue when try to run the program. (Already try to restart the computer and it still has the same issue)

This is my screen capture when the issue were found.

What should I do if this issue were found? and is there any wrong step or missing files to install the software? :?
I'm not yet try to install another software (same like Inkscape such as Corel) with wine but I try to install game (Counter Strike) using Wine, it's okay and run flawlessly at Linux. Is there someone who experienced something similar here? :?

Thank you very much and every suggestion, I will be very appreciate. :D

Hello Nyonyo,

Using Wine to run win32 Inkscape on your Linux system is ludicrous.

There are two things you can do here.

1:
Tell the lazy bastards at your IT department to get off their asses and install it for you. It would take them 10 seconds of their precious time to click a button in the software library of unity or type sudo get-apt install inkscape in a terminal window. It's default supported software in Ubuntu.

2:
Just hack the ROOT password using these steps and tell the MOFO's to stuff it. You have console access, so you can always gain ROOT control of the machine.. Harrr:

The video

Added benefit is that you can from there on start creating havoc on the network, making them pay severely for their blunt refusal. How,.. ehm,.. Well have a look at Backtrack Linux ;-)

Now it is only up to you how serious you want to take these remarks.. Trust me I'm not. But in general it can't hurt to kick a little shit around in an organisation that seems to think they're in total control. As IT operative I used to do security audits and test systems on how idiot proof they were. None are, regardless of OS. There are always attack vectors from the inside that cannot be stopped, only detected after the fact. I think it is the task of an IT department to facilitate users and try to protect them from themselves. Doing out of SLA software installs is part of that service.

I have also worked for organisations where personal applications were "frowned on" but not a linux based system where security is a bit more rigourous than Windows.

Trying out windows Inkscape 0.48 on my PCLOS system and very similar error messages occur.

If you look at WineHQ, the only report for Inkscape is for 0.46, probably because I would think that there are Inkscape packages for all/most linux versions.

I did try 0.46 and it works, I did not install Inkscape into wine, I took the installation from a windows machine and popped the folder into the WINE 'program files' directory. Launched it with a simple wine inkscape.exe from the Inkscape folder.

It might be worth starting at that base level and working up through the versions until it fails.

Hi all,
Tks for your responses.

@Jelle
That is IT departement policy because I was working and used office computer with non-design purpose. I just used office computer to make some report so they only install software like libre office and internet browser (yeah...it's sucks because the access were limited :x ). We have another division for design purpose. :)

@Rich2005
Thank you for your suggestion and I try it to install inkscape 0.46. It run well and doesn't have any issue while installing and launch the inkscape...but... (here we go ;) ).... another issue were found. I have a problem with font display and I still didn't figure it out how to solve it...

This is the preview of Inkscape when running.

I think this is because my linux didn't support the Inkscape font library. When I tried to add more font, same case is occur because I don't have access to root administrator. Is that any other way to solved it??? :cry:

But, first off all, I would like to say many thank's to all of you for your suggestion. I really appreciate it.

I haven't done it lately but, starting inkscape from command line there are switches to create a verbose log file, I believe. This should lead you on the right track as to what's loading and what's not loading as it should. As for 99% of all problems in Windows, even when running under Wine, it'll be related to permission problems. It's quite funny because all these permissions everywhere drive (appropriated) users bonkers and it's still the OS with the worst security. Go figure.

@nyo7nyo

Out of interest I found and got an Inkscape 0.47 working in WINE, a lot better than 0.46

I did notice all the squares in you first post, so not too surprised at your last post.

Don't know which country you are working from but it will be a localisation issue.

How to fix - don't know. Ask your IT department.
