Hi! I am creating my images in inkscape by importing png files and combining them together. I can make the images ungrouped in inkscape, but after saving as svg or dxf, they open in my silhouette cutting program grouped and i can't change this at all.
does anyone know what may be happening or what i'm doing wrong?

Re: Keeping my images ungrouped when opening in other softwa

Welcome to InkscapeForum!
I don't think you're doing anything wrong. I've heard the same complaint when opening Inkscape images in other programs as well. I think it's just how those programs handle the file, I think.
After you import the PNGs, you must be adding some vector content? Otherwise you wouldn't need Inkscape (and could avoid the problem by using another program). Why does it matter to the cutting program, whether the paths are grouped or not? Does it change something about how they are cut? Or did you want to move them independantly after opening in the cutting program? You'll have to forgive me not understanding how the cutter machines and/or software work. I'm just asking in case I can offer some alternative.

Yes - you are correct - I'd like to be able to move parts of the image independently. I just tried saving as a dxf and checked off "use robomaster type output" and it ungroups some items but not all - very strange!

Hi Pharmgirl,
Brynn's right. This is a Silh Studio problem and not yours. I find that in almost every program, I have to ungroup SVGs from Inkscape, but in SS I sometimes have to ungroup twice. I have reported this to Silh Support a while back. My process is to ungroup SVGs once after opening them in SS as routine, then try to turn the cut lines on and if that doesn't work, ungroup them again.

I found a solution I think! On the silhouette end - instead of trying to "ungroup", you "modify" your image and click on "release" - the image is then broken into its parts . whew
