inkscape suddenly stopped working

Postby birdy27 » Wed Jan 19, 2011 4:50 am

i've been using inkscape for years. for the first time that i remember, i tried to open it today and received an error message: the application was not able to start correctly.

so i tried downloading version 48. the installation seemed to go well. but it still isn't working. and it looks like my old 47 version was still there.

i'm not a techie person, but i'm LOST without inkscape! i make money from my designs. i have windows 7 64-bit operating system.

thanks!

First thing that I would do is to delete your old Inkscape profile in-case one of the files there has been corrupted.

On Windows this can be found: C://Program Files/Inkscape/Share

(or just delete the Inkscape folder by hand) This will reset any preferences that are causing Inkscape to malfunction. Not sure if this will solve your problem; but it is a first step for diagnosing the problem. (the other one would be to run inkscapec.exe from that directory and reporting the output)

The Inkscape user profile directory containing the preferences file (preferences.xml), any custom user templates, palettes, extensions etc. on Windows is not stored in the installation directory of Inkscape, but in
  • %APPDATA%\Inkscape
This path can be entered as is into the address bar of the Explorer in case you don't know what %APPDATA% resolves to on your local system.

The default for the environment variable %APPDATA% is:
  • Windows XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data
  • Windows Vista / 7:
    C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming
