hexagon halftone pattern

Drawing a hexagonal halftone pattern with the tiled clones panel.

Draw a hexagon with the :tool_star: tool and resize it to 100 px width proportionally, then at the create tiled clones panel

use p1 symmetry

shift x 55% per row, 10% per column,

shift y 17,321% per row, 0% per column [17,321% "should be" (3^0,5)*10% so it won't be totally perfect]


scale x -10% per row 0% per column

scale y -10% per row 0% per column


10 rows, 20 columns-

Anyway, i feel more loved then the Beatles right now. Not going to quote John Lennon, here....

Why ? ....because five minutes after i had posted the problem, i was able to do it on my own.
Something that made my head hurt for 2 hours before.


IMO tiled clones desperately needs some improvement. Pixel values as an alternative for the 'Shift' instead of the percentage, plus a kind of preset would be good.
Maybe something that you can do on your own...a formula for a certain effect that you can save for future use.
Not that i think anyone is listening...maybe some goodwill wishes from ~suv.

Im currently making a library for myself, so i dont have to start over and over again.

Might be nice to have an extension that shrank/enlarged stroke using the tweak tool. That could make a similar effect, but "paintable".

AFAICT tweak can't do that.

(Nor can I write a decent extension.)

You can use modify path/interpolate attribute in a group extension for something similar -the interpolation is linear not exponent as with the clones.

The problem with tiled clones starts with the result all being diagonal...(as in image)
So instead i started with a line of hexagons, group them temporarily to duplicate and make rows (manually...easy with snapping).

Then, selecting each individual row i transformed by an increasing percentage.

For a short time i was hoping you could just create one column and tesselate, but even that wasnt really easy with the percentage displacement we have in the current form of tiled clones.

TBH, its not such a big problem doing this little pattern all manually, but imo, it should be EASY with tiled clones....the functionality is all there (!), its just a pain to set up.

So the only problem is that you cannot add a (-1)^n multiplier for shifting n-th row and column?

So how about creating three tiled clones with the right setting to generate it without the unwanted shifting.

After that, clone the original with these settings:
p1 symmetry

shift x 0% per row, 10% per column,

shift y 67,321% per row, 0% per column


scale x -20% per row 0% per column

scale y -20% per row 0% per column

5 rows, 7 columns-

then select the clone of the first tiled cloning and run the tiled clones with these settings:
p1 symmetry

shift x 0% per row, 22,222% per column,

shift y 86,603% per row, 0% per column


scale x -22,222% per row 0% per column

scale y -22,222% per row 0% per column

5 rows, 7 columns-

But you got the message anyway. I have no idea what "add a (-1)^n multiplier for shifting n-th row and column" means.

About your solution: i think its great but who works that way ?
And who wants to work that way ?
I just want to do a little halftone effect, not solve the world equation, if you know what i mean. ;)

And unless i cant save your technique as a preset, theres no way im coming back to this thread every time and copy all the values, when its so much easier to do it manually...

Heres something i came up while exploring some more ideas:
you clone a halftone made of squares and then comes the fun part:
you transform the original object and get a cool diamond pattern, that gets even more interesting when you scale it up.

I think thats the real beauty of tiled clones. Play around with something in a meaningful way.
You can get a gazillion cool things when you play around with a simple sunburst.

I don't know. Would probably use duplicating manually most cases.
But even if I wanted to use the tiled clones I would be fine with the clones shifting in each row in one direction.
Just make more columns with it and delete the unnecessary ones on the sides.


By the (-1)^n multiplier I meant to shift every second row in the opposite direction.
Guess that wouldn't work either as per se.
(Milkytracker's ping-pong sampling mode was another thing coming to my mind.)


I think thats the real beauty of tiled clones. Play around with something in a meaningful way.


Be careful with it, sometimes it can lead to a crash -like if you modify the parent's gradient fill did in 0.48, don't now if it got fixed entirely. Guess cloning groups of objects with transformations, shapes, or path effects can be risky too.

Just a heads up, there's a free tool that allows to create halftone patterns like these, http://halftonepatterns.com. It's simple but it saves the pain of manually making them, and you can save them as SVG.
