I'm pretty bright, but I simply cannot grasp what I am doing wrong with opening an .svg to save to .dxf in inkscape .46. I open the file (it doesn't need to be traced right since it is .svg?), then do a save as .dxf - I get the dark black screen BUT NO .dxf save menu, then if I attempt to close it, I get a screen saving to .dxf will mean data loss and I get a blank file.
What do I doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo? I want to use the .dxf file in funtime for cutting to a cutting machine (gazelle).
I've tried the better .dxf script, everything - what is the problem here?
Thanks.

Ok first, I wonder if you saw this topic

Basically it says that you need a program capable of creating or using DXF files, already installed. But it seems to me that doesn't always apply, in every case (although I haven't figured out why). So let's continue anyway.
1 - Open the SVG in Inkscape.
2 - File menu > Save As
a - type filename with .dxf extension
b - choose .dxf from the 'Save as type:' dropdown menu
3 - click Save
Now, what is this dark black screen you're talking about? Oh! Do you mean the command prompt window? It will flash up for a second and then disappear before you have time to read whatever it says? I'm not sure if that should be happening, but let's proceed like it is, for now (because I'm not all that familiar with the cutter/plotter technology).
And next, when you try to close the window, you get some kind of error message that threatens data loss? Sometimes that message appears when no data or image loss can really be expected (no idea why). BUT what I think it means in this case, is that you HAVE been successful in saving as DXF! Look in your files, wherever you saved it. I'm guessing you'll see it there? If so, then I think it's ready for you to use with the cutter; and you're on your own from here (at least as far as I can help you....I think we might have a few members and visitors who can help with the cutting machine-side issues).
I'm thinking you're good to go now, but please do reply back if you still can't get it to work

Re: saving as .dxf ver. 46 HELP!
Is there a reason that you are not using release 0.47? It has better DXF exporting and the development release of 0.47 (soon to be 0.48) has even better DXF exporting. Anyway, the trick is converting ALL of your objects in Inkscape to paths first. Give it a try. I'm using AutoCAD 2011 to bring in my Inkscape DXF.
