Help with tracing an image then cutting it

Postby clk0555 » Wed Feb 23, 2011 3:27 am

Let me start by telling you I'm very new to this so if I sound stupid I'm sorry. I'll just tell you what I'm trying to do and maybe some one can help. I have a logo I would like to print on vinyl and then convert to svg so I can cut it. I can do everything except figure out how to just have it trace the outer image. It traces everything and then wants to cut it all; I just want to cut around the outside of the image. Can this be done?

Hi clk0555,
Welcome to InkscapeForum! Image

I'm a little confused. You want to print it on vinyl, or cut it out of vinyl? If you need to convert to SVG, then you must be using one of those cutter machines? But if you're using a cutter, then you don't need to print anything. As far as I understand, those things just cut according to the SVG file. I don't think they need a printed image?

If you just want to cut around the outline, then you need to use only the Single Scan portion of the Trace Bitmap dialog. You can find instructions here: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... ingle.html If it ends up cutting out more than you want, try using Path menu > Union. That will combine everything into a single path.

Let us know if this helps, because I'm not sure I understand.

Brynn, Print *and* Cut. Print a (non-svg) image, then cut around that based on an svg version.

clk0555,
I'd guess you're tracing a hollow image, and want only the outside part (e.g. If you were tracing an "O", you'd want to cut around the black outside, but not cut out the white inside). Select the trace, then perform the operation Path->Break Apart. Then delete all the bits that aren't the outside.
