Help, Bounding box is cutting off my drawing

Postby TCWenz » Mon Mar 04, 2013 2:59 pm

I have been working on this file so I saved it and when I opened it back up the dotted line / bounding box has cut off the right edge and bottom. It seems that sometimes when I make any changes and save the file it is different the next time I open it. I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong but I have no idea what it is. Let me try to explain what I am doing. I am using the file Skull_final2.eps to build a full sheet (Skull_page_final2.eps).I created the full sheet, saved it then opened it back up and the image had changed in two ways, not only did it change the spacing of the skulls but the skulls themselves had changed from the original, so that's when I opened the original (Shull_final2.eps) and it had changed, it's being cut off at the right side and bottom. Please help me figure out what it is I'm doing wrong. I will attach the two files in question.

Thank you,
Tim
This will not let me upload the files. How can I get them to you?

If you save it as SVG, you should be able to upload it.

Also, you may not want your email adress posted like that. Let's see, posted around 11 pm last night (my time) it's probably already been picked up by spammers. But removing will at least prevent more.

By any chance did you use a mask or clip in the file, that sometimes messes my files up. You might also check to ensure that you don't have any hidden objects, or a locked object on another layer. (try opening up all layers and click on unhide, unlock, etc). Sometimes I simply open all layers and click on select all just to see if there's something wonky out there.
There could be so many reasons this happens, andby no means am I an expert in fixing any of them, just wanted to throw out a couple of ideas to try. good luck.

Hi.

I have also found that by saving as EPS part of the page will be cut off.

Try instead to save as plain Postscript (PS) and use ghostscript http://www.ghostscript.com/ to convert the file to EPS.
( Install GSView as well when installing ghostscript http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/ )

Another option is to save as PDF if it's accepted by "whoever" is going to use your file.

Use Inkscape - View - View Mode - Outline to look at your file - there are some "leftover ellipses" and "reversed paths" which should be fixed.
Nice Skull!

See this forum thread as well; http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13601

So i'm guessing someone - probably not you - needs to work on node editing skills - just covering up problem areas works for one application but causes problems with clips and groups when translated into other formats.
Let me know if these work. Now you just have a single vector path. If you open the eps in inkscape or another application it will come in as a layer of one group - can't avoid that with eps - but it won't have groups in that group, and no clips. If you are going to tile it I recommend you copy it, delete the layer, paste it back in the root layer, tile it, and then export the eps. This will result in, again, an eps with only one layer and one group and no clips or masks.

What's node editing?
Again druban - impressive - can you explain why saving EPS on the original cuts off a part?

No.

But maybe because all those clipping boxes and coordinates that get redefined at some point to clip the whole in an undesirable way.
Dammit, Jim, I'm just an artist, not a doctor!

druban,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your corrections were great! The end result I was going for is perfect. I really appreciate your help. In my book you are a doctor and an artist, you brought my project back from the dead.
Thanks again to all.
Tim
