File won't load after "too many heap sessions". Recovery?

Postby Lorc » Mon Apr 08, 2013 12:34 am

Hello, a file I'm working with crashed with a "too many heap sessions" message and now gives a "failed to load the selected file" error whenever I try to open it. I've got a backup from a few days ago, but I'd like to recover as much work as possible.

I've tried looking up the problem and this error is mainly mentioned alongside large file sizes. Mine is only ~7MB, although it does contain a very large number of objects. Certainly in future I'll be dividing things up across more .svg files. But in the meantime -

I tried opening the file in notepad and (to my untrained eye) everything appears to be there and not totally garbled. I also tried deleting some extraneous information (on a copy) like remembered export paths in case that brought the file down to a manageable complexity, but no luck.

Past that point I really have no idea what I'm doing, so I wonder if anyone knows anything about this issue, or a way I might be able to recover my progress? In case it matters, at the time of the crash I was doing a lot of exporting as png.

Here's the version of the file that I can't open: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/9180585/SkillIcons07.04.13.svg

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

When I followed your link to the dropbox file, I got the following. Maybe that's the location of the error, or what's causing the error, or something?

Also, I remember seeing a message or 2 about the heap session error in the forum, a year or 2 ago. I'll search and try to find it for you :D

Edit
I couldn't find the topic I was thinking of, but I did find this, which for all the world looks very similar to your problem. It's very informative topic :D

Hope I didn't mess up the dropbox link, but the svg works.
Somehow one path was cut in a half in the codes at the end, and two group tags and the svg tag closing was missing.
That means, 1539 icons could be recovered in total.

Hi Lazur URH
I am impressed!! (How did you figure that out that quick??)

Your link produces this;
Error (403)
It seems you don't belong here! You should probably sign in. Check out our Help Center and forums for help, or head back to home.

I am already at home!

I saw something about broken xml tags in a previous post, but the link to the file they used to close them was broken. Thanks - hopefully the most recent ones icons are amongst the ones that you've saved.

It looks like you've copied the dropbox direct link though. To paste a public link you need to put the file in your "public" folder and then right click it to get a public link.

Oh sorry again. Opened up the svg in notepad++. That error message directed to the end of the document, so than it was clear there was a syntax error as the svg tag was missing.
Sadly it was easier than generating a proper dropbox link to that.

Does it work now?

Edit: I use a computer with another user, who installed dropbox first, so I uploaded straight to the site.

Thank you very much for that. Unfortunately it's eaten all the icons I made since my last backup and a few more besides. Thankfully I do have a backup, but that's still about 50 icons lost. I'll just have to work from there.

Again, thank you very much for your help.

I can't view anything either, not that I could answer your question.
I used to crash all the time with the heap msg thing, using Win 7. I now automatically hit my save key every 2 minutes, and I set Inkscape to automatically save every 2 minutes, AND every so often I also do a 'save as' and make a file with the same name + copy (ex: dog pic copy.svg), it's worth it.
There's something else that I now can't fully remember but it's in some inkscape file that tells it how much memory to pull from other places/(I can't quite recall what I did, but maybe it will spark someone else), anyway, once I changed it, it allows me to do bigger drawings without crashing so much. And, if it does crash, I have several backups to work from - never trust one file - ever, I learned that the hard way.
good luck in the recovery.
