Hi,
I am trying to make a "nucleosome" like structure ( please take a look here http://www.spektrum.de/fm/912/thumbnails/hdat.jpg.1311559.jpg)--essential a rope wrapped twice around a short cylinder with four 90% wedges. I have been using inkscape for a long time for standard stuff such as
making squares etc however, this is too advanced for me. I think I can make a cylinder but I am not sure how to make the rope that is wrapped around it twice.
Thanks
Lee
How to make this kind of an image
Re: How to make this kind of an image
Hi.
Do you want to trace that image, or draw another alike?
For tracing it's a bit too small. However it is in that site's thumbnail section, I cannot find the original one.
By the way the back part of that turning line is geometrically off.
Drawing such is just a matter of time, and node editing.
Only to reproduce the shading of that mentioned rope is a bit tricky.

Re: How to make this kind of an image

That's something I would probably model in a 3D program and import to Inkscape.
Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Hi
Making this in a 3d package is a good suggestion.
Just for fun, made a "quick n dirty" test in POVRAY. http://povray.org/
All "Hand coded" to a text file. Need (much) more refinement before it's "production ready" Let's just wait for Lazur's Blender version.

Hi Ragnar,
This looks perfect. Do you have a .svg file that you can send me?
Many thanks

Hi,
Thank you for your response.
I want to draw this (preferably in inkscape as I know it and I can learn from this and make other objects like this)
rather than trace it.
Thanks

Re: How to make this kind of an image
Hi Lee,
A vector illustration is always going to be 2D, so some form of tracing or "view generation" will be required to get from 3D to 2D.
3D programs like Blender, Sketchup, 123D and other CAD are good ways to visualize shape, orientation, light and shadow. Those will need recreation in 2D by exporting, tracing, drawing, etc.

Hi
Unfotunately POVRAY does not make SVG images - bitmap only. You can get any format or resolution.
Chime back if you want any bitmap images.

Drawing is more of a personal thing of seeing and constructing images.
We can give you some ideas on how you can draw-reconstruct parts of a particular image,
but cannot tell you how to draw the image that is only in your imagination.
So if you could give us a link to a bigger image that you would rebuild -or trace-,
or could give a precise explanation of what and how would you visualise would be better.
Deciding proportions of the image, details, overall look, and such all depends on personal taste,
and in this case your knowledge in the field.
