0.91 can't paste picture from clipboard. But 0.48 can?!
0.91 can't paste picture from clipboard. But 0.48 can?!
In 0.91 I am unable to paste pictures from clipboard into Inkscape. This annoys me since picture pasting works perfectly fine in 0.48. Do I need to enable some setting in 0.91? Or is 0.91 just not capable of pasting pictures from the clipboard?
I should note that there is a workaround because I have both 0.48 and 0.91 installed. I open up 0.48, paste the picture into that window, then copy the picture from the 0.48 picture object, and paste it into the 0.91 window. Slightly annoying, so I'd still like to be able to paste directly into the 0.91 window instead.

What OS are you on?
In Win 7 I can paste directly a screenshot (from Snipping Tool), or an image copied from within a Word document, to Inkscape 0.91 with Ctrl-V. However, if I select a PNG in the Windows File Manager, rightclick "copy" and try to Ctrl-V it in Inkscape, it says "nothing on the clipboard" (in Inkscape notification bar). I can however slide the PNG into the Inkscape canvas, which launches the "import" dialog on mouse button release.

Re: 0.91 can't paste picture from clipboard. But 0.48 can?!
Win 7 64bit Home Premium.
"In Win 7 I can paste directly a screenshot (from Snipping Tool), or an image copied from within a Word document, to Inkscape 0.91 with Ctrl-V." <- this is exactly what my 0.91 wont do, but my 0.48 will do it just fine.
When I use an snipping tool, like Greenshot, or any image processing program, like Photoshop, Paint, Gimp etc. to copy image into clipboard, I can't paste it directly into 0.91. I have to paste it into a 0.48 window first, then copy that object inside 0.48 and then I can paste that into 0.91. I can't copy/paste files from windows file manager at all into Inkscape, not 0.48, not 0.91. (So that part may be working as intended). I still can drag and drop any file (with a valid file extension) into Inkscape initiating import dialog, both 0.48 and 0.91, which is also normal I guess.
So the issue is that I can't paste an image from the clipboard into a 0.91 window.

Re: 0.91 can't paste picture from clipboard. But 0.48 can?!
Copy-pasting from Gimp also works for me (as said above: Win 7, Inkscape 0.91). So it doesn't seem to be a general Inkscape issue...
Haven't got a clue however what it could be then, sorry...

Could you be trying to paste into a hidden or locked layer?

Nope, there is only the one default layer that is there to begin with and it is not locked.
Re: 0.91 can't paste picture from clipboard. But 0.48 can?!
When you try to paste into Inkscape 0.91, is the Paste option greyed out on the menu? Or can you click Paste but nothing happens? Does using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+V) make any difference?
To be honest, I have no clue what it might be, but I'm wondering if it's a Windows problem/incompatibility issue somewhere. There are a ton of articles/forum posts on the web about people having issues with Windows clipboard, though of course that doesn't really explain why yours works with 0.48 and not 0.91. I'm sorry, I don't know what to suggest except perhaps the usual uninstall/reinstall Inkscape, in case something's screwed up there.

Paste option is not greyed out, I can choose it, but nothing happens. CTRL-V also produce no result. It's ok I will try to reinstall or live with copying from 0.48 window for now. Thanks for the help

Well, don't give up yet. We've only just begun to troubleshoot!
Can you copy something from 1 Inskcape document, and paste into another?
Hhmm.... Well I can't paste from Windows file manager (I'm using Windows Explorer) either. When I try, the status bar says "Nothing on clipboard". However, it IS possible to just drag and drop from Windows Explorer!
Rats! I'm out of time. But when I get back later today or tonight, I'll try to copy from GIMP.

Yes, I cant perfectly fine copy paste everything from one Inkscape document to another (also works perfectly from a 0.48 document to a 0.91 document and vice versa). Drag and dropping from windows explorer also works fine, and like you I can't copy paste from windows explorer, only drag and drop.
Re: 0.91 can't paste picture from clipboard. But 0.48 can?!
Ok, I'm back. I was just about to try copy/paste from GIMP. But I need to test the same way you're trying it. Unless you're talking about using the GIMP's limited vector features (paths) you could potentially only copy the whole image, for pasting into Inkscape. I'm not sure that would be a reasonable expectation (just like copying from Windows Explorer).
Oh! Yes, I was able to copy a whole image right out of the GIMP canvas, and paste into Inkscape! I honestly thought it would not work. Because that's essentially importing an image....well, to my limited understanding it's the same as importing....but this bypasses the whole Import dialog! It looks like pasting it automatically embeds it (as opposed to linking, which is one of the choices you have when importing).
When you're trying to paste into Inkscape, are you clicking on the canvas first, before you paste? I've found that I have to click the canvas, to...I guess it sort of activates the layer. Sometimes that's necessary, and sometimes it's not. (It depends where the focus was, when you left Inkscape to go and copy something. If the focus was already on the canvas, clicking on it won't be necessary. But if the focus is in a dialog, for example -- no go.) (because you can't paste into a dialog....well, except for numbers in certain fields) (or text in the Text dialog) So yes, there have been times when I try to paste and it doesn't work, but then after I click the canvas, the paste does work.
And also, I've found that sometimes I can't paste unless I have the Selection tool enabled. These are both things that just have become so automatic for me, that I had forgotten my experience of not being able to paste.
Keeping my fingers crossed!

Re: 0.91 can't paste picture from clipboard. But 0.48 can?!
Pasting copied regions from Gimp or screenshots (print screen)... no problemo here, in .91 on XP or Win8.
Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

This is really weird but it works now. I haven't done changes (that I know of!) but today it just works. I don't even have to click the canvas. Alt tabbing to inkscape and then I can ctrl-paste and it works. It works any way I copy the image to clipboard, right click on a picture a homepage and choose "copy image" or using Greenshop and "capture to clipboard" or photoshop ctrl-c the selected area. Everything works now and pastes perfectly into inkscape 0.91.
Sorry for all the trouble but it's just... strange. But it works now.

Ah, Mickey$0ft Windoze, isn't it just wonderful. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, put up your finger in the wind to see if it going to be a good day.
Unfortunately, I'm stuck with 8.1 (and refusing to upgrade to 10) because most of the engineering software I use doesn't run under Linux.
