The Inkscape Community Announces 0.48.4 Release

Postby spaventapasseri » Wed Dec 26, 2012 12:15 pm

Just a paste from the official Inkscape website,
the 0.48.4 is out ;)

Happy Holidays! We have a gift for everyone!

After quite a while since our last announced release (sorry about that, there was a lot of confusion surrounding it, and I fully accept responsibility for that), the Inkscape Community is proud to announce that Inkscape 0.48.4 is out. This is our fourth bug fix release for 0.48 and since we won't count the last one, it contains ~120 bug fixes to improve security, stability, and functionality on all platforms since 0.48.2. .....continue to ---->http://inkscape.org

Thanks to all people behind the project Inkscape ;)

Hi - is there any info on when 48.4 might be available for OSX? I assume not at the moment, as all the links to a .dmg for 48.4 actually end up with downloading 48.2 instead.

If you follow the link above, it will explain that 0.48.4 is available for Mac at....I believe it's called Macports.

If there is new information, it will be posted on inkscape.org first (new Mac OS X packages for Inkscape 0.48.4 are work-in-progress, but not yet ready, no ETA either - the latest available Mac OS X package at the moment is still Inkscape 0.48.2).

The version mismatch for the direct download link is unfortunate, but not easily fixable with the current design of the site (0.48.4 is actually the latest stable version, just that there are no new precompiled packages for Mac users available yet) - sorry for any confusion this might have created.

Here's again the full quote of the news article posted on inkscape.org back in late December last year, when 0.48.4 was released:
The Inkscape Community Announces 0.48.4 Release
December 22, 2012

Happy Holidays! We have a gift for everyone!

After quite a while since our last announced release (sorry about that, there was a lot of confusion surrounding it, and I fully accept responsibility for that), the Inkscape Community is proud to announce that Inkscape 0.48.4 is out. This is our fourth bug fix release for 0.48 and since we won't count the last one, it contains ~120 bug fixes to improve security, stability, and functionality on all platforms since 0.48.2. Check out the 0.48.3 release notes & 0.48.4 release notes for brief summaries of some of the fixes and improvements, or the 0.48.3 milestone page & 0.48.4 milestone page for the full lists of closed bug reports, or just jump right to downloading your package for Windows or Linux.

At this time we also need to apologize that we are not officially packaging builds for OSX. This was the primary reason that 0.48.3 never saw an official announcement. Please know that we are still actively working on making the experience on the OSX platform better and are working towards native builds (no promises of if/when any will be available.) As a side note, MacPorts does already have 0.48.4 available, so a portion of our Mac users are not left out in the cold.

At this point it is very possible that we will have one more point release for 0.48 as we have a handful of bugs blocking us from releasing 0.49 (it will be well worth the wait!). Stay tuned for more news!

re OSX - OK many thanks, I missed or didn't read properly the Dec2012 announcement.

quick question :
MacPorts does already have 0.48.4 available, so a portion of our Mac users are not left out in the cold.

this may sound super-nooby, but what does that mean - and does it mean that I can get access to 48.4 on OSX?

  1. MacPorts as well as Fink and Homebrew have updated to Inkscape 0.48.4.
  2. Note: If you have no idea what stuff like MacPorts, Fink and Homebrew is about, do not bother:

It would be beyond the scope of this forum (and beyond the scope of user support for Inkscape in general) to introduce you to available package management systems for OS X.

If you are still interested in diving into compiling & installing software from source code on OS X (and don't shy away from working in the Terminal): all three projects offer FAQs and documentation on their home pages, and Wikipedia has brief summaries too (MacPorts - Fink - Homebrew).

ah ok - I found the inx for compiling 48.4 for OSX via macports, so now I understand. But before even getting there I found this

http://inkscape.13.n6.nabble.com/Mac-OS-X-0-48-4-RC5-td4966075.html

and that installed a working version of 48.4 on OSX 10.8.2 in about 2 minutes flat, and also solved a persistent xlml problem I was having with extensions. Thx for all your replies though.

Just keep in mind that what you decided to download and install is not an official stable release package for OS X yet - it is an RC (Release Candidate).

noted and recognised as such. It's either that or stick with a persistent xlml error in 48.2 on OSX 10.8.2.

Thx for the reminder though.

Known issue with the official 0.48.2 package, can be fixed by inserting a single line into a shell script inside the application bundle, instructions here (or by using the egg-bot extensions installer which applies (a slightly different) patch to the same file).
