Print SVG file with original dimensions

Postby inknewbe » Fri Jan 20, 2017 10:29 pm

Hi all,

I download this svg file from the Internet.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B01dPF ... sp=sharing
Open it in Inkscape and try to print (regular printer) the shape on pappar to check the measurements.
I get a smaller object, the dimensions are reduced.

What am I doing wrong ? How do I print with the right dimensions ?

Appreciate your help.

Hi.

For printing in 1:1 scale I'd suggest saving as a pdf.
By opening a new document and importing the raster image it will be placed in the default A4 template.
All you have to do is scaling the raster image to the right physical dimensions and saving as pdf, then at the print setup outside inkscape set actual size.

Haven't checked but probably the raster image was made at 72 dpi and inkscape runs at 90/96 dpi depending on which version you use.
That would mean scaling the image up by 125% or 133,333% could be good as well.

Thanks for the prompt reply,
" .By opening a new document and importing the raster image it will be placed in the default A4 template. "
The original image fits in A4, I know cause I've seen the finished object.

" ... All you have to do is scaling the raster image to the right physical dimensions ... "
I don't know the right physical dimensions that's why I wanted to print it.

I'm using Inkscape 0.91 for mac.

Sorry I goofed posting !

Oh my bad. Looked it at the browser and by the pixellized rendering I thought it was a raster image.

By opening the file in a notepad it comes clear it was saved with illustrator, therefore everything is at 72 dpi.
Opening the image with inksape 0.92 the page size is 6,37500 inch / 8,25000 inch.
If it should be 133,333% larger, that would be 8,5 inch /11 inch -so my previous assumption on the size was also wrong because it's US legal and not A4.

Check this file, everything should be scaled to the right size now:

Thanks !
I thought we had a misunderstanding. My fault, didn't ask the right question.

So, how do you make sure that when you open a SVG file, from someone else, Inkscape keeps the original measures ? ( that's why I was printing it on paper first before attempting to create a Gcode)

Your file seems fine. Thanks again.

Yesterday there was a long conversation at the irc #inkscape-devel channel about either scaling or using a viewbox on opened images to retain certain document sizes that are not specified so well. I can't seem to find the logs but in general I can tell the developers are aware of the problem and that there is no trivial solution that can be applied every time.
May su_v chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: found this article that sums up a good part of it.

Unit and scale issues are common across disciplines. Any time files are exchanged, the potential for a unit/scale error exists.

Hopefully, folks will generate a human readable drawing with dimensions to accompany any digital files.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/
