Hi Pixelsaint,

I can't promise that I can help, but maybe giving people here a couple more details can be useful.

I get that you have installed the Ubuntu Studio distro on your computer. I understand that you've got a plotter/printer, which, according to google, is, non-abbreviated, a "FlyCut 720 Contour Cutter plotter".

As for the rest, I don't understand what you've been trying or doing to get the error message.

"Your user does not exist" -- I haven't ever heard of that error message in Inkscape. When you get the error message, look at the titlebar of the window which is displaying the message. That will help you figure out which part is giving you the error -- Inkscape, or the hardware, or the software or Ubuntu or your computer. First step to solve an error message -- find out where it's coming from :D

Ok the previous problem got sorted, it was a profile issue. I had a "custom profile" somehow. Simply changed that to Admin profile and that was it. Now its something else again :x

I got a CH341SER linux driver but have no idea whatsoever to install it.

(I dont know why programmers always want you to travel a 1000 times to the moon and back to get something done? HUndreds of forums to read and research to get a simple answer from people that either dont have a life, rejected by society and try to get a little sun by responding in a forum they know nothing of to hear " i cant help you because i use corel draw in an inkscape forum ...)
Isnt it that simple? If you dont have a clue, leave it to the people that do... I know ill have to do a course soon on code ... but in the meantime ill count to 10 000.

Thank you for your help im just really frustrated. I'm by no stretch lazy to research, but this is getting ridiculous. Maybe the admins of these forums should remove the useless responses. Should forums not be to help and not further frustrate?

I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with this. I'll probably be going through the same thing soon, when I start my transition from Windows to Linux. My first experience in a Linux forum was ridiculous. I totally agree with you about why people answer messages, if they can't be helpful, and all they want to do is insult you.

Well I probably can't help much, but I'd rather try anyway, on the chance it might help.

What does this driver drive? Is it the plotter/printer, or something about the usb to serial thing? Mostly I'm just curious.

Is this the driver you downloaded? https://github.com/Ozzadar/CH341SER_LINUX

I found this....well, you probably found it already. But just in case, I'll post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3143 ... untu-14-04

Well hopefully Moini will be along pretty soon. She's a Linux user, so maybe she can help Image

hi brynn yes thats the one. Think some other pages post the same one. Nope i tried that, it totally messed up my cutters mind. It just cuts gibberish now because of blindly just installing out of total disparity lol. The difference is the 340 and 341. That tutorial it seems only works on the 340. People with your heart give me hope again. Thank you for your efforts i really do appreciate you. I guess it will take time to find out who can really help around here and keep them like gold nuggets. :)

I noticed on the github page, it looks like instructions for using a terminal (in the readme). Is there a problem with that? Do you know how to use the terminal?

I don't know about Linux, but in Windows, sometimes you have to uninstall a driver before you install a new one. Sometimes the driver file does the uninstalling for you, but other times, you have to uninstall manually.

You're spot on, Brynn. They are command line instructions.
Have you been able to follow them, Pixelsaint?

Btw. there's no guarantee that driver will work, it's for old versions of the Linux kernel.

Hi Moini

Like i said im new to linux (week old) some instructions to paste in terminal is quite easy but others like this one is a bit over my understanding. If this then is an old version do you know where i might find a newer one. Linux is weird and frustrating at times to me as some older files work with new installs and vice versa.

Thanks for yout effort to assist me.

Yes, I just read the same. What Linux distro are you using? Which version?

Oh. Right. Sorry. :-/
So it /should/ be working already.

Still, installing would work like this:

- So, you download this:
http://www.wch.cn/download/CH341SER_LINUX_ZIP.html
- Unpack it to a place where it won't be lost.

- Then you open a terminal.
- type 'su' to become root. Hit Enter. Enter your password. Hit Enter.
- go into the directory with the unzipped driver files, e.g. type 'cd /home/pixelsaint/Desktop/CH341SER_LINUX', and hit Enter.
- Type 'make', hit Enter.
- Wait.

If all works, then you can do
- 'make load' (might be that you need to repeat this step - login as root, load module - every time you want to use the module, not sure)
- Ctrl+D to leave root shell, Ctrl+D to close shell.

If it doesn't, either explore the messages you get by doing a web search, or append them here as a text file (zipped, I think the forum doesn't allow to upload text files directly).

That was an example directory, Pixelsaint. You need to use the one where the driver files actually are.

Ah, from your PM I gather that you are using the correct folder? Are you sure you typed it correctly? The path should start with a / .

That path starts with a/ and you don't have that on your computer. There is also no command given, so as long as the file is not executable, it wouldn't make a lot of sense. The error message is correct.

Type 'cd /home/pixelsaint/downloads/CH341SER_LINUX' to change to the directory.

You computer is probably right. Try leveraging the command line auto-completion when typing commands.
You can enter part of the path, for example, then hit tab to autocomplete, as far as possible, hit tab again, continue typing, until the path is complete.

You can also do it step by step: cd into home, then type ls <Enter> to see a list of all (non-hidden) files and folders, then cd into the next directory, type ls again, to see all available options, and so on. I'm quite sure there's an error in the path.

Off topic:

Holy crap!

Maybe I should follow MS into the cloud after all? Can it really be that hard to install a driver on Linux?

No. Usually not. Depends on the device - most drivers come preinstalled, esp. if you use Ubuntu/Linux Mint.
For some (very new) devices, there aren't any drivers at all, though. If you want to use Linux, and want to buy some new device, it's a smart idea to try and find out if it will work before you buy.
OTOH, some older devices will only work on Linux, because there are no current Windows drivers.
Btw. entering a correct path on the command line is not a hard thing to do. It's also no different on Windows. I've given the user some tips how to make it even easier.
