More Refinded Selection Tool

Shape : Sometimes it would be nice to be able to pick a path (starshape, circle, freehand) and turn it into a selection (as if this was the selection-rectangle drawn with the mouse)

Behaviour : Additional options would also be nice : Select everything enclosed, select everything not enclosed, select everything touched (object or box?), select everything touched or enclosed, select everything not touched...

Do you mean like you can with programs like Photoshop (and probably GIMP)? The concept of "selections" that you see in bitmap software doesn't work in Vector software--it's redundant.

Oh, I think I get what you are suggesting. So if you draw a star over a bunch of objects you would want to select all the objects that star overlaps, or does not overlaps, or does not cross outside the area defined by the star. Is this something you've felt a need for in your own work? Can you give an example where it might be useful?

I once wanted something like that, but forgot the occasion - Then i thought about the current problem of Bryn with the spirograms, namely a host of little objects, some of whom i want, and some of whom i don't want, and i realized that with a slightly more complex cutting shape than a circle, it would be rather difficult later on to get rid of the 'cut-out' paths while retaining all the 'good' path debris that cluttered the screen.
