Paste style not working?

Postby itemState » Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:06 pm

Hi,

I can't paste style to work (OS X 10.6 / Inkscape 0.48) -- i understand i should copy the source object then select the target and choose "paste style". Nothing happens... I need to copy fill and stroke settings from one object to a lot of others, really can't do this manually. Any way to do this?

thanks!

Hi itemState,
That sounds like you're using the proper technique. The only thing I can think, is to make sure you're not trying to paste onto a hidden layer. And make sure you have what you want copied, properly selected. Probably you've already tried a bunch of times and looked for these things.

So I'm guessing this is either a bug, or bug-related. And hopfully ~suv will be along shortly, to confirm, or correct me if I've missed the mark. But I found at least a couple of bugs related to pasting in Mac OS X at Launchpad, with my meager searching skills (actually just used the tags cloud for this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bugs?field.tag=osx).

hmm...yes it's not working in 0.48 in OSX latest. maybe recent updates did something.
when you paste style you see in the status says "no style on clipboard".
Is inkscape using the XQuartz clipboard or internal one for that?

It works fine with Inkscape 0.48 and current trunk on Mac OS X Leopard, and I havent' read any recent reports that it would fail on Snow Leopard.

Did you forget to change the X11 pasteboard preferences to work around the known conflict between Inkscape and X11/Xquartz? Also, please verify that you copy the style information from a vector object and not from a pasted bitmap (if you didn't change the X11 preference setting, you are likely to have lots of bitmap copies in your file if you copy&pasted objects before).

aaah yes. unchecked "update pasteboard" and all is well with copying and pasting style.
i just noticed that since upgrading to xquartz and latest stable inkscape on OSX leopard, i now get three started app icons: the mountain, an old X11 icon, and new Xquartz icon. but that's something totally unrelated to pasting style.
cheers

Did you log out and login back again after installing Xquartz from xquartz.macosforge.org? If you can't resolve the issue that you have two X11 apps started by launchd [1], ask on the X11-users mailing-list (hosted by Apple).

[1] On Leopard, the Xquartz development versions overwrite the files of X11/Xquartz installation provided by Apple. On Snow Leopard however, the two are installed side-by-side, and you can configure if Xquartz.app or X11.app is started by launchd.

thanks for the tip ~suv. i'll check it out.
maybe one day i might need to clean install snow leopard, as i originally bought the intel imac with tiger, installed X11, then there was an X11 from apple, then the snow leopard, and then installed XQuartz. hope i got the ordering correct. the X11 from apple i'm not sure it was full install or an update, which was part of installing the apple SDK for development. so some things might not be as they should. i think i might have even tried XQuartz 2.6 (not for inkscape reasons), before downgrading (for inkscape to work) to XQuartz 2.5.3.
i might not remember everything exactly, so don't worry. inkscape is running, despite the mess.
