Object to Path

Postby davman » Tue Aug 07, 2012 6:58 am

Hi there
my first post on the Inkscape Forum. I'm hoping someone will help, cause it's probably so simple to do
I'm trying to follow the 'Arrow' tutorial from The Inkscape Tutorials Weblog

Drawing the square and rotating it is fine however, when i click the Object to Path function and then select the Edit Paths by Mode function, click on the bottom node of the rotated square, the line splits and there are 2 end nodes. The tutorial shows the result of this as being a triangle.

Am i missing something here or is this what should happen?

How can i tell if the Object to Path function has worked?

thanks in advance

Simon Hume

Welcome Simon!

Do you mean this one: http://inkscapetutorials.wordpress.com/ ... -tutorial/?

It sounds like you might have used the "Delete segment between 2 nodes" button? Try using Delete key on your keyboard. The tutorial doesn't say so, but you might need to hold Ctrl key while you press Delete key. There's a setting for Inkscape to try and retain the shape of a path when a node is deleted, which is enabled by default. Using Ctrl, it doesn't try to retain the shape. Perhaps the tutorial author has is disabled?

Let us know if that helps :D

With the selector tool picked :tool_selector: (spacebar to switch to and from this tool) the status/info bar at the bottom of the window will tell you if it is a path or any other kind of special object, eg 'rectangle'.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Thanks for your reply. That was the tutorial and yes your suggestion worked! I've now found the setting in the Preferences that you mention and have turned it off for the time being

Druban
Thanks for your advice on the the status of an object.

Simon
