Trouble Exporting to PNG - Missing layers / details

Postby mb77z » Mon Oct 20, 2008 11:19 pm

Exporting to PNG file ERROR. Missing Layers / Details

I am wanting to export a large file from inkscape, as a PNG file, but am having problems.

I want to edit it in Gimp afterward.
Gimp cant handle the file, so I have split it into 4 sections, and am trying to export each quarter separately by selection.
It has layers.

I have managed to export 3 of the 4 correctly - eventually, with some trouble. The 4th just wont export properly. It either exports as a blank file, or just the top layer exports. I have tried putting the layers together, grouping the 2 objects etc. But every time it is either blank, or just the first layer. Can anyone help please?

Why can't you edit it in gimp? I can open svg files in gimp without problems.

I don't know if it is because it is very large. The size is 24320 x 8816 pixels.

I did not realise you can open SVG's in Gimp, so I have been converting to PNG. I can export everything in one go from inkscape, but gimp has memory problems when it tries to open the PNG. Sometimes it just hangs. I tried the SVG aswell. Same problem - it just hangs.

What I'm actually trying to do is convert the file to a 256 color format PNG (but with a max of 112 colors - preferrably 64 ) . It is to use in a game. I don't believe inkscape can do this?

Gimp can, but it cant load the file.

I have also tried IrfanView - to convert it, but again, it can't handle the file size.

It is strange because the graphics are really simple.

For anyone interested, here is a file containing a small piece of the map. It illustrates the point though.

http://www.mediafire.com/?9mh1ywdpybp

This is the grid, on top of that I have ladders.

All I want to do is get it to a 256 color png - that has 112 or less colors in the palette. The way I have been doing this , is by exporting from inkscape to a PNG, then loading in Gimp to modify the image mode, and reduce the colors. I have also tried Irfanview to do the same, with no success.

But as you can see, when you try to export this to a png, the resulting file is blank.

Is it something to do with the fact that I have clipped it - or what? When I try to export it with the ladders, I often get just the ladders, and sometimes nothing. The rectangles were clones made from one, but I'm sure that I 'un-cloned' them. Any help would be useful - thanks.

I had no problem in making bitmap copy of your grid by selecting it and using "Edit -> Make a bitmap copy", by doing this the bitmap will be placed in the same dir where SVG file is, here is my result: http://img.wklej.org/images/73272grid_4 ... 82-331.png

Try to change background color from white to transparent in "File -> Document Properties -> Background"

That is strange. I go straight in, select EDIT, Make a bitmap copy, and it comes out all all white. The background is set to completeley transparent white. I tried setting it to completely transparent black, and the same thing happens - it comes out white.

I forgot to mention that I'm using SVN version of Inkscape, maybe it's a fixed bug.
