PATHS OPERATIONS DIFFERENCE

Postby SUMATORIO » Sun Nov 01, 2015 3:26 am

HI everyone:

I'm trying to cut an object with a path. The first object is create by a interpolation between two straight lines, The other object it's a circle (converted to path).

To the result after the interpolation, I separate the originals and the rest I've ungrouped and then combined (Ctrl +K).
The other object it's a circle ->object to path.

I make the operation difference between the first object the combined staright lines (belowe) and the circle (above) and the result it's no good.

I've been doing something wrong?

Thanks for your help

Hi.

Boolean operations like cut "works" with closed paths, where intersecting areas have a meaning.
(For example when they share a segment, seemingly random nodes may be generated.)
Technically you can use an open path too, but the result will always be a closed path.
If you want to "slice up" the ellipse at given points, it would hardly work as you did it.
Because the cutting object doesn't encounter any area.

Depending on what you want to achieve, there may be different workarounds.

edit: Cut path? Hmm haven't realised that.

Maybe you'd like to try Path -> Cut Path (and then after that, remove the parts of the straight lines that you don't need)

Hi Moini:

I've tried to Cut Path and don't work and I 've tried with Division and neither work.
I did a similar operation in my video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxJZOqb8mfk#t=1.34. I speak in this video in Spanish.
What I make it's combine a set of five object and then do a Intersection with a square. The paths of the objects combined, are open or independent and work very well.

At the file I've sent first I' tried to make a intersection and don't work at all.

Regards.

Cut Path does work, but it doesn't delete the sections for you. It just breaks the paths into sections. You have to delete the unwanted sections yourself.

You could make Difference work (or Intersection) if you used Stroke to Path on all the straight lines. But you'd have to duplicate the circle as many times as you have lines, and do one operation for each line.

Fernando, in your video, you could have avoided the color loss (3:05) by reversing the stacking order, I think - put the square on top instead of to the bottom.
(I like to listen to Spanish from time to time - sounds like it's even 'real' Spanish Spanish :) )

And did you know about Jabier's extension for making patterns?
See https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/1358/ (those patterns are difficult to reuse, and they don't show in browsers, unfortunately - as they use some very interesting layer tricks and cloning - but on the other hand, they are very, very easy to create in a seamless manner). You might like to take a look, it's fun! (take care to work in the correct layer)

Hi Moini:
I didn't realize that in a operation of intersection the result take the atributes of the object at bottom. Thanks a lot.

Relate to Jabier's extension I know but I don't have the template / extension. It's, I think, like a model of Tavmjong http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/TilePattern.html, a square grouped and tiled 3x3 . He design the square, but in the tiles there are a mess for me. Jabier has made automatic all the process. I don't have the extension. At the moment I prefer create and control the process at the way I show in my videos. I don't know how to get the extension.

Thanks for your advises.

Regard.
Fernando

It's available from our website:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/1358/

just like a few other extensions:
